Here’s why Detroit offers the whole package for your big meeting.
1. Top-ranked airport for seamless travel
The Detroit Metro Airport is just a 90-minute flight or less from 60% of the U.S. population. It accommodates all major domestic airlines, five low-cost carriers, and several international carriers, welcoming more than 33 million passengers every year. Once guests land, getting around is a breeze. The airport is within 20 minutes of downtown and 60 minutes of most metro Detroit destinations. People can easily access shuttles, an onsite hotel, and one of the most efficient road systems in the nation, so they can feel at home and ready to enjoy your event.
2. Over 36,000 hotel rooms to choose from
Metro Detroit is equipped with more than 36,000 hotel rooms, with 5,000 in the downtown core. Our largest downtown hotel, Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center, has over 1,300 rooms alone. It’s also ready to go for your event, with over 45 meeting rooms and 100,000 square feet of convention space. Downtown Detroit even has three full-service casino hotels — the MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity, and Greektown — which are all within a mile of the city's biggest convention center.
3. Millions of square feet of meeting space
Metro Detroit has a robust selection of meeting spaces for all event types, whether you’re hosting a career conference or an annual sports tournament. Take our signature convention center, Cobo Center, which boasts one of the largest contiguous exhibit floor spaces in North America. After undergoing a $279 million renovation in 2015, the center now offers over 2.4 million square feet of usable space, free and facility-wide WiFi, an in-house broadcast studio, and eight banquet rooms.
4. Lively restaurants, shops, and entertainment
Downtown Detroit has something for everyone — music lovers, shoppers, foodies, and museumgoers. It’s the birthplace of techno music, host of the Detroit Jazz Festival, and hometown of music icons such as Diana Ross, Madonna, Eminem, and Alice Cooper. It’s also home to the historic Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation and the Detroit Institute of the Arts. Sports fans will find a home here, too. The Detroit Tigers (MLB), Detroit Lions (NFL), Detroit Red Wings (NHL), and Detroit Pistons (NBA) all play within walking distance of one another in their downtown stadiums.
5. Reliable transportation throughout the city
Your guests shouldn’t have to worry about how they’ll get to their hotel or your event. And in Detroit, they won’t have to. Metro Detroit’s freeway system is considered one of the most efficient in the country, making it simple for meeting planners to transport attendees around the area’s 2,000-plus square miles. Visitors can also take advantage of the Detroit People Mover, an elevated and automated light-rail system that connects the central business district with 13 stations at major points of interest, including Cobo Center and the GM Renaissance Center. If that’s not enough, Detroit recently launched its new streetcar, the QLine, which brings customers right to the front door of shops and restaurants along Woodward Avenue.
6. Burgeoning new developments
Detroit is constantly evolving and offering new experiences for visitors and businesses. The city’s first-ever Garment District is being created in a partnership between Detroit Garment Group and Midtown Detroit Inc. And the new District Detroit development project is set to encompass 50 blocks of thriving businesses, parks, restaurants, bars, and event destinations. Established companies aren’t the only ones benefiting from this boom, however. Detroit is also primed to beat Silicon Valley at its own game, giving rise to burgeoning artists, tomorrow’s CEOs, and a new generation of entrepreneurs.
7. A best-in-class service and PR team
Detroit is rich with opportunities to delight your guests and meet your business goals. In fact, you might need some help discovering all that this great city has to offer. That’s where the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau comes in.
