On Oct. 10, 2018, Hurricane Michael, a Category 5 storm, ripped through the eastern side of Bay County in northwest Florida. It was the strongest storm to make a Florida landfall in over 25 years, causing an estimated $25.1 billion in damages and killing more than 70 people. Six months after the storm, Bay County had collected an estimated 10 million cubic yards of debris — enough to fill the Empire State Building eight times. It has been a stressful and exhausting year for area residents, but their resilience and strength has kept their heads up and their eyes on the future.
One clear blessing for this struggling community in the midst of all the turmoil was that the western end of the county, which includes Panama City Beach, was spared most of the major impact from the storm. A longtime popular tourist destination for the southeastern United States, Panama City Beach serves as the major economic driver for the area. Fortunately, Panama City Beach welcomed tourists back to its white sandy shores and crystal-clear emerald waters for its 2019 season.
As lucky as PCB was to miss most of the storm damage, Sheraton Panama City Beach Golf & Spa Resort was not so lucky. Formerly known as Sheraton Bay Point Resort and located on St. Andrews Bay, the AAA Four Diamond resort was just within reach of the damaging winds of Hurricane Michael and had to immediately close for repairs. The resort, having just completed a $30 million renovation in 2016, was forced to lay off over 100 employees and undergo another multimillion-dollar renovation. Understanding the important economic impact it has on the east end of the city, the Sheraton PCB property worked diligently to restore this well-loved resort and much-needed jobs to the area. On Aug. 15, a little over 10 months after the storm, the resilient Sheraton Panama City Beach Golf & Spa Resort reopened its doors.
