Santiago was founded in 1541 by Pedro de Valdivia under the name Santiago de Nueva Extremadura, after the apostle Santiago and Valdivia’s homeland, Extremadura. Santiago is the administrative, economical, and financial capital of the country. The mixed modern and old architecture grant the city a particular trademark, making it a cosmopolitan city open to all visitors. From here, one can start day trips to the wineries in Maipo Valley, ski or practice mountaineering in the Andes Mountains and/or visit the attractions of the coast, such as Vina del Mar, Valparaiso and Isla Negra, among many others.
