Augusta Museum of History

Visit the region's home for history. Featured are a number of permanent exhibitions, including the award-winning Augusta's Story - a 12,000-year journey through local history; a restored 1917 steam locomotive, special exhibits: The Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown, Celebrating a Grand Tradition, the Sport of Golf and six life-size statues of golf's greatest players and much, much more. Minutes from downtown Augusta, Phinizy Swamp Nature Park offers you the chance to see great blue heron, red-shouldered hawk, river otter, and the elusive alligator in their natural setting. Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History

Born into slavery, Lucy Craft Laney became one of the state's most influential educators. She started the first kindergarten and nurses' training class for blacks in Augusta and founded the Haines Institute, which educated thousands of black students. The museum is located in the Historic Laney-Walker District, near the original site of the Haines Normal and Industrial Institute. The mission of the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History is to promote the legacy of Ms. Lucy Craft Laney through arts and history and by educating and exposing children and adults of Augusta, the State of Georgia and beyond to the arts, history, literature and leadership through exhibits and programs Hours: Monday: Closed Tuesday - Friday: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Saturday: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm Sunday: Open for special events and by request only Admission Fee/Ticket Price: $2-5
