The Wellington Cable Car was established in 1902 and is New Zealand’s only historic funicular railway still in operation today. For over a hundred years passengers have enjoyed the dramatic views of our growing cityscape and the surrounding hills that define Wellington harbour. Take this short historic trip to enjoy stunning views from the lookout over the city & harbour Te Whanganui-a-Tara and easy access to many of Wellington's top attractions. The terminus at Kelburn is adjacent to the Cable Car Museum (free entry) which houses two of the original cable cars. Nearby is Space Place (Carter Observatory &Planetarium) and a free shuttle operates regularly from outside the Cable Car Museum to Zealandia. Also, Kelburn Village is only five minutes walk away and the Botanic Garden has a number of interesting downhill tracks which take you back to the city centre in 40 minutes.
