Messe Basel covers a gross exhibition surface of 162,000 square meters spread over 6 halls. (Hall 6 includes non-removable stands for BaselWorld.) The multi-story car park close to the exhibition area offers 1,600 parking places. If needed, some additional 4,000 Park & Ride parking places can be provided. Next to the own Congress Center Basel and the Musical Theater Basel, the striking Exhibition Tower comprising Service Center of MCH Group as well as offices space and hotel services and facilities also belongs to the exhibition ground of Basel.

The inception of the Vitra Design Museum dates back to the early 1980s. With the aim of documenting the history of the Vitra company, Vitra CEO Rolf Fehlbaum began collecting the furniture of designers who had influenced the company's development, such as Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Alvar Aalto, and Jean Prouvé. As the collection grew, so did the desire for an architectural venue in which the objects could be displayed. Back in 1986, Fehlbaum developed the concept for a design museum and in 1987 contacted Frank O. Gehry as the architect for the planned museum building. That same year, Fehlbaum met the later director of the museum Alexander von Vegesack through Ray Eames. Together Fehlbaum and von Vegesack developed the idea of a publicly operating museum from the original idea of a closedprivate collection.

The Fondation Beyeler sees itself as a public forum for innovation, not just as the custodian of a valuable treasure. One-third of its 3,800 square metres of exhibition space is therefore set aside for two to three special exhibitions a year. The purpose of those exhibitions is to create exciting interaction between the collection, which covers a limited time span, and the present.

The Kunstmuseum Basel possesses the worlds largest collection of works by the Holbein family. Further examples of Renaissance art include major pieces by such masters as Konrad Witz, Martin Schongauer, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Mathias Grünewald. Most of these early treasures originally belonged to the collection of a Basel lawyer, Basilius Amerbach. Purchased by the city in 1661, they formed the core of the worlds first public municipal museum.

With its situation on the right bank of the river, where the Rhine forms the outer border of a large district of the city, Tinguely Museum creates a new order within a rather questionable urban design alongside the highway. The rectangular museum occupies the entire eastern part of the Solitude Park. The four sides of the building each relate in a specific manner to the surrounding spaces.
