Historic Temple Square

This magnificent granite structure was constructed over a period of 40 years, from the laying of the cornerstones on April 6, 1853 to the dedication on April 6, 1893. Although it was the first one under construction, the Salt Lake Temple was the fourth temple to be completed in Utah. The walls at the base of the temple are nine feet thick, and six feet thick at the top. Although the Salt Lake Temple is not open for tours, you can stroll around the grounds and stop in the South Visitors’ Center to see a scale model of the temple. There, you can explore the beautiful rooms of the temple with interactive displays.

Capitol Theatre

The Capitol Theatre is one of Salt Lake County’s most beloved buildings. A landmark in downtown Salt Lake since 1913, a newspaper reporter at the time described the building as “rich and restful, without vulgar or gaudy display.” Vaudevillians, silent movies, and “talkies,” were the mainstay in the theatre for years. Renovated and reopened in 1978 the Capitol Theatre is known today for its elegant turn-of-thecentury architecture and serves as the home for Ballet West, Utah Opera, Children’s Dance Theatre, and Broadway Across America -Utah.

Utah State Capitol

In 1888, Salt Lake City donated 20 acres of land—then known as Arsenal Hill for its previous use as private munitions storage—to the Utah Territory for the construction of a capitol building. Only in 1909, years after Utah became the 45th state in the Union, did real progress unfold. The state legislature approved a seven-man Capitol Commission to oversee the design and construction of a state capitol. The budget was set at $2.5 million, but funding remained a problem until 1911, when the state received nearly $800,000 in inheritance taxes from the estate of Union Pacific Railroad president E. H. Harriman. The legislature responded with a $1 million bond, and the project was underway.
