Travel through time as you explore Basel on foot. Basel's Old Town is one of the bestpreserved and most beautiful in Europe. The Old Town is divided in two sides by the Rhine: Grossbasel and Kleinbasel. Both parts of the city have their own individual charm. In a shallow pool 19 cm deep, 16 m wide and 19 m long, cast in black mastic asphalt the artist placed nine black figures driven by low-voltage current that spout water as they move. These nine iron eminences cheerfully converse with one another like the mimes, actors and dancers once did on the stage at this exact spot. With this fountain the popular artist endowed Basel with a new landmark. Regardless of the weather, the fountain site is always thronged with people being animated to picnic or moved to strike up a conversation with a stranger. This work of art has become part of the life of Basel’s inhabitants in a way few other objects have.

The Basel-Mulhouse airport, known under its trademark EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, has a trinational vocation and as such is a symbol for the international co-operation which became absolutely vital after the Second World War.

The leading art house in Switzerland. In the Basel Art Museum you will come across the oldest public art collection in the world. The museum owns the world’s largest collection of works by the Holbein family. The Renaissance is also represented with works by Witz, Cranach the Elder, Grünewald, and others. Highlights of the 19th century are paintings by Böcklin, van Gogh, Gauguin and Cézanne. In the 20th century, the main focuses are on cubism (Picasso, Braque, Léger), German Expressionism and American art since 1950. Contemporary art from the 1960s onwards is exhibited in the Museum of Contemporary Art.
