Exhibiting the residence of Vadodara’s royal family, Laxmi Vilas was built in full-throttle in 19th-century at a cost of ₹6 million. The most impressive Raj-era palace in Gujarat, the Lakshmi Vilas Palace displays elaborate interiors with well-maintained mosaics, chandeliers and artworks. Set in an expansive park-like ground, it aso includes a golf course. Reputed to have been the largest private dwelling built till date and four times the size of Buckingham Palace, the Laxmi Vilas palace opens every day except on Mondays from 11am to 5pm with an entrance fee of Rs.100/- The history of Vadodara lies in a charter of 812 that identifies it as Vadapadraka - a village attached to the nearby town of Ankottaka. In 600 AD, severe flooding of the Narmada River forced the inhabitants to move to the eastern side to a village known as Vatpatrak, which later developed into Vadodara

Studded with forts starting from the hills of Pavagadh, and extending into the city of Champaner – The Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park offers a heritage site including archaeological, historic and living cultural heritage monuments such as a hill fortress of an early Hindu capital, and remains of the 16th-century capital of the state of Gujarat. Dating from the 8th to the 14th century, the park displays palaces, entrance gates, arches and tombs. Located on the top near the Kalika Mata Temple is an important Hindu shrine, that attracts a large numbers of pilgrims throughout the year. The park boasts the transition between Hindu and Muslim culture and architecture in the late 15th to early 16th century, particularly focusing on the early Islamic and pre-Mughal city. Open all days of the week from 08:30 am to 05:00 pm, this park was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2004
