The Cologne Carnival is among the world's largest and most well-known carnival celebrations. It is also called "Fastelovend" or "Fasteleer" in dialect. Activities gradually increase afterwards: After the quiet Advent and Christmas season, the carnival sessions and balls start in the New Year. The Street Carnival - the "Crazy Days" - starts on "Women's Carnival Day", the Thursday before Rose Monday. From this date on the carnival revellers known as "Jecken" celebrate in the pubs and on the street until the evening of Carnival Tuesday.

Archaeological Zone/ Praetorium

Museum
20 minutes bort
Cologne still boasts impressive relics of its Roman past, when the city served as the capital of the province of Germania Inferior. Among these relics is the Praetorium underneath the City Hall as well as a section of the Roman sewer. The Middle Ages are also represented in the future Archaeological Zone by a mikveh, the ritual Jewish bath. This mikveh served one of the oldest and most important Jewish communities in Germany. These sites will all be incorporated into the future Archaeological Zone and the associated Jewish Museum. Visitors to the original sites will find monuments from a span of two millennia. What will be presented here is the cosmopolitan heart of Cologne´s history, ranging from the impressive ruins of the Roman governor´s palace to the remains of one of Europe´s most important Jewish quarters.

Shoppingstreets Schildergasse and Hohe Straße

Shopping
1 km bort
Cologne is one of the most popular cities for shopping. We're told that there are people who make special trips to our cathedral city just to stroll and shop to their heart's content. The most popular shopping streets are Schildergasse and Hohe Straße. Those who like trendy boutiques should make a detour to nearby Ehrenstraße. The glamour of many luxury brands adds its lustre to Mittelstraße. There's also a wealth of shopping opportunities in the arcades in the city centre and along the Ring. Here you can shop till you drop in an ultramodern atmosphere — and fortify yourself afterward with exquisite local delicacies in one of the many lively coffee bars. Less well-known, but therefore all the cosier, is a shopping tour through the high streets of the individual neighbourhoods (called "Veedel" in the local dialect).

SIGHTSEEING IN COLOGNE The central location of Steigenberger Hotel Cologne, offers you an ideal starting point for the "Must Do's" in Cologne. One of the most popular sights is the Cologne Cathedral. There are 558 steps up to the cathedral tower, but the view over Cologne makes up for it. If you would like to have a panoramic view from the other side of the Rhine with a view of the cathedral, a visit to Cologne Triangle is worthwhile. Another highlight of Cologne is the Hohenzollern Bridge, which is especially popular with couples to swear eternal love by symbolically hanging a small padlock. The Cologne Zoo is an experience for young and old. More than 10,000 animals have found a new home in the zoo. From the largest elephant park north of the Alps to the Hippodrome with fascinating insights into the world of wild animals under water. Visitors interested in history can visit the NS-Documentation Center of the City of Cologne. This is the largest memorial for the victims of National Socialism. For the somewhat different historical appraisal, a visit to the Chocolate Museum is worthwhile. Here you can make visual, auditory, tactile and even olfactory and taste experiences around the chocolate and its origin.
