The Jing An district takes its name after the iconic Jing An temple. Despite being dwarfed by skyscrapers all around, the Jing An Temple’s awe-inspiring gold-themed architecture holds its ground and commands the respect befitting a heritage site. With its roots dating back to the Song dynasty in 1216, the Jing An temple has over the centuries undergone numerous transformations. The temple houses the largest jade Buddha in China and a copper bell that dates back to the Ming dynasty. In 1921, the temple was expanded, thus further enhancing its grandeur. It was converted into a plastic factory during the Cultural Revolution and the premise was destroyed by a fire but was finally restored to its former glory in 1983 at a cost of US$1 million.

Ponto de referência histórica

Spreading over 5 acres, the garden features the grandeur of the Ming Dynasty’s architecture with a hint of Qing Dynasty’s influence. , The beauty of the intricate designs on the buildings and overall façade of the towers are accentuated by the lake in the garden. With lighting installed around the garden, the site undergoes a 180 degrees transformation when the sun sets. The end result is a perfect combination of modernity and tradition. Adjacent to the Garden is a bazaar which by itself is another icon of Shanghai. Here, visitors can treat themselves to local delicacies on top of shopping for tasteful souvenirs. Along with the bazaar is the Yuyuan Old Street, known for being the centre of trade in pre-modern China as well as the “Cheng Huang” Temple, which is as ancient as the garden.
