Originally named mission San Antonio de Valero, the Alamo served as home to missionaries and their indian converts for nearly seventy years. Construction began on the present site in 1724. in 1793, spanish officials secularized San Antonio's five missions and distributed their lands to the remaining indian residents. These men and women continued to farm the fields, once the mission's but now their own, and participated in the growing community of San Antonio.

Most Americans know the clarion call "Remember the Alamo!" and have a hazy recollection that the "fort" originally had been built as a Spanish mission. What is less well known outside the Southwest is that the Mission San Antonio de Valero--the Alamo--was only one of a chain of missions strung along the San Antonio River. Established between 1718 and 1731, these missions were built not only to spread the faith of the conquistadors, but also to serve multiple foreign policy objectives for the Spanish government. The famous Alamo is now a state historic site under the stewardship of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and serves primarily as a reminder of the Texas Revolution of 1835-36. The other San Antonio River missions--Concepcion, San José, San Juan, and Espada--with some surrounding lands, constitute San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. By cooperative agreement with the Archdiocese of San Antonio, the mission churches remain active places of worship. Their importance, however, reaches far beyond their religious significance

Recognized as one of the most ornate facilities in the country, the Majestic has long held a special place in the archives of Texas theatrical and architectural history. The Majestic was designed and built in 1929 by John Eberson for Karl Hoblitzelle's Interstate Theatres, and stood proudly for many years as the largest theatre in Texas and the second largest motion picture theatre in the country. It was intended to be the most modern and ornate building in South Texas - complete with new sound and projection equipment - and was the first theatre in the state to be totally air-conditioned.

The King William Association (KWA) was founded in 1967 as a voluntary neighborhood group designed to address urban and neighborhood issues, communicate ideas to city officials, and provide information to residents and visitors. The association has over 300 members, including property owners and renters, as well as neighborhood businesses and institutions. KWA is governed by a Board of Directors elected by the active membership in September of each year. The King William neighborhood is rich in history and cultural diversity. The area includes three local and national historic districts, as well as properties individually recognized for their historical significance. The neighborhood offers bed and breakfasts, art galleries, restaurants, and a thriving commercial corridor known as Southtown. The KWA area is bordered by the Blue Star Arts Complex and its sister neighborhood, Lavaca. KWA neighbors represent all walks of life. Living in an urban village, especially one of homes for which maintenance is a labor of love, tends to bring neighbors close together. As a long-time resident explains, "It is a neighborhood where a person is identified not by what he does, but by his house. After all, these houses were here when we came, and they'll be here when we leave."
