The Roanoke Civic Center continues to be Western Virginia's premiere full-service facility with a 10,500 seat Coliseum, 2,151 seat Performing Arts Theatre, 14,000 square feet Exhibit Hall, and a new 46,000 square feet Special Events Center. Major trade shows, convention and consumer shows, and meetings and banquets have all discovered that the Civic Center can provide all the amenities needed to create a successful event. Live entertainment, including sporting events and cultural and concert performances by some of the biggest names in the world, continues to excite and amuse audiences all year long.

The Historic Roanoke City Market, also called the Farmer's Market due to the profusion of plants, fresh fruits, and vegetables available during the growing season, is the oldest continuously operating open air market in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It began when 25 licenses were issued to "Hucksters" (Vendors) in 1882. The first City of Roanoke Charter formally authorized a municipally owned market in 1884. The first City Market Building was completed in 1886 and formed the core around which the Curb Market and Market Square developed. The original building was destroyed by fire and was replaced by the current building in 1922. After serving as an indoor market for many years, the City Market Building was renovated in the mid 1980's and currently houses an International Food Court - a hugely popular lunch time destination in downtown. The Historic Roanoke City Market is open year-round, seven days a week, and closes only on Christmas and New Year's. There are 42 permanent tables covered by yellow and white awnings that mark an inviting display of fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, and plants during growing season. There are additional spaces in Market Square where vendors erect tents to display their wares. In recent years, a number of artisans have joined the farmers and planters offering handcrafted items, unique jewelry, and other art objects. The market even boasts a variety of fresh meats! The Historic Roanoke City Market has been recognized as a "Great American Public Place" by the Lyndhurst Foundation along with other winners like the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC and Central Park in New York City. The Western Virginia Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is an independent, private 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Foundation owns and operates four downtown Roanoke properties: Center in the Square Center on Church The former Shenandoah Hotel The former Raymond Loewy Norfolk and Western Passenger Station Housed within our signature building known as Center in the Square are five cultural arts and science non-profit organizations: The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge, Historical Society of Western Virginia, Mill Mountain Theatre, Science Museum of Western Virginia Collectively, we draw over 400,000 visitors annually from across the nation and forty foreign countries, including approximately 200,000 children from 44-percent of Virginia's school districts whose educational experiences are enriched significantly by the seven organizations. The in-house and outreach programs offered by Center's organizations enhance classroom instruction in science and the arts, preparing students for successful futures. Our primary day-to-day activities are to operate these buildings and to raise the funds necessary to take care of all the housing-related needs for these seven independent, non-profit arts and cultural organizations.

On June 6th, 1944 United States soldiers, in one of the most pivotal battles of World War II, invaded the French coastline in order to propel German soldiers out of Western Europe and lead the way for victory against the tyrants of that era. Dedicated on June 6th, 2001 by president George W. Bush, the National D-Day Memorial was constructed in honor of those who died that day, fighting in one of the most significant battles in our nations history.

The Roanoke Star, also known as the Mill Mountain Star, is the world's largest freestanding illuminated man-made star, constructed in 1949 at the top of Mill Mountain in Roanoke, Virginia. It was the largest star ever assembled until the El Paso Star was completed in El Paso, Texas.[2] However, the Mill Mountain Star still holds the claim to world's largest illuminated man-made free-standing star, as the El Paso Star lies flat on the ground. After construction of the star, Roanoke was nicknamed "Star City of the South".
