Historic Rock-Cut Cellars
Historic Rock-Cut Cellars

The history of Nuremberg is inseparable from the history of beer. At the end of a tour of the historic undergraound rock-cut cellars and the Hausbrauerei Alstadthof, you can try a traditional Nuremberg red beer. At the end of the 14th century in Nuremberg, there were more than 40 breweries for a population that totaled less than 30,000 people. A regulation from the city council required everyone who wanted to brew beer and sell it to have their own beer cellar for fermentation and storing of beer. It is this medieval law that produced today's historical rock-cut cellars. A Maze of Cellars Spread Over Several Stories The castle, city wall and St. Lorenz Church are all made of sandstone and create, along with many other buildings, the unique cityscape of Nuremberg. In the sandstone hill underneath the Imperial Castle, a rock-cut labyrinth of cellars was carved out of the stone over the centuries. This maze of cellars was used for brewing and storing beer and for the collection of clean water. Here, many citizens found shelter from bombing raids during the Second World War. Discover the Underground Nuremberg More than 20,000 m² of rock-cut cellars create the largest contiguous cellar labyrinth in southern Germany. In addition to the rock-cut cellars, there are other underground sights in Nuremberg which are worth a visit. Irreplaceable art treasures from Albrecht dürer, Veit Stoß or Martin Behaim were stored in the Historical Art Bunker during World War II. The casemates, underground defensive tunnels in the bastion of the castle, show the skill required to build Renaissance fortifications.

Step into the Craftsmen's Courtyard and you'll soon catch a whiff of the delicious scent of Nuremberg bratwurst, gingerbread and other specialties of Franconian cuisine. The medieval feel of the narrow lanes, shops and half-timbered huts makes this little village within the big city a special attraction. If you look towards the Old Town of Nuremberg from the main train station, the first thing you see is the Frauentor Tower. The tower was made round in the middle of the 16th century and is one of four large round towers in the city wall of Nuremberg. Today, on the historical cobblestones of the former ward, you'll find the colorful and lively Craftsmen's Courtyard. Experience Traditional Handicrafts You can watch the craftsmen work and buy a wonderful and unique example of traditional artisan work. A gingerbread maker, leather craftsman, glass painter and cutter, potter, tin smith, an artist of poker work and a goldsmith all bring their art and artistry to life in the Craftsmen's Courtyard. Precious Handmade Memories of Nuremberg Many of the things that have made Nuremberg world famous can be seen and purchased in the idyllic Craftsmen's Courtyard. If you are looking for something special - whether it be handmade dolls, tin toys, wooden toys, beautiful jewelry or arts and crafts - you're sure to find what you're looking for. Fans of Franconian cuisine can enjoy Franconian wine, bratwurst on pewter plates, fresh beer, specialty chocolates and genuine Nuremberg gingerbread.

Documentation Centre Nazi Party Rally Grounds: In the Third Reich Nuremberg was the "City of the Nazi Party Rallies". The north wing of the unfinished Congress Hall on the former Nazi Party Rally grounds, designed by the National Socialists to accommodate 50,000 people, is now occupied by the Documentation Centre Nazi Party Rally Grounds. The permanent exhibition "Fascination and Terror" deals with the causes, contexts and consequences of the National Socialist tyranny within an exhibition space of 1,300 sqm. The focus of the 19 chronologically arranged exhibition areas is the history of the Nazi Party Rallies, which as mass gatherings were used by NS propaganda for staging the "national community". The exhibition continues outside, with large panels providing supplementary information on the history of each venue along the Nazi Party Rally Grounds, which today still cover approximately 4 sqkm. Regular special exhibitions are held in the Documentation Centre Nazi Party Rally Grounds. The Educational Forum offers numerous study programs for school classes and youth groups as well as adult groups, providing in-depth insights into various topics of special interest.

In the criminal court of the Nuremberg Palace of Justice world history was written: On November 20, 1945 the trial against the "main war criminals" began in the criminal court, "Courtroom 600". 21 leading representatives of the National Socialist regime were made to answer for their crimes against peace and humanity. In October 1946, 11 months later, the sentences were pronounced. From 1946 to 1949 twelve Subsequent Proceedings were held before American military tribunals. More than 60 years after the trials a permanent exhibition has been opened at the original site to provide relevant information on the background, proceedings and consequences: Explanations are given on the role of the defendants in the National Socialist power structure and the crimes they were accused of. Historic sound and film footage convey a vivid impression of the trials. The significance of the trials for the development of modern international criminal law made "Courtroom 600" world famous. The "Nuremberg Principles" ensuing from the International Military Tribunal today form the basis for the International Criminal Court in The Hague. They illustrate how attitudes have changed since 1945/46 towards those responsible for the fortunes of the world’s nations and peoples.
