Charles Fort

Historisch monument
The historic Needham’s peninsula on which Hilton Barbados Resort sits was once part of the critical Fort and a strategic point of defense for Barbados. The Fort was constructed in 1650 by the Barbados Militia and manned by its forces to defend the Capital City, Bridgetown, and its main harbour from invading forces who sought to gain ownership of the island. George Washington’s visit to Barbados started on September 19, 1751 and he landed in Barbados on November 2, 1751 on board the ship “Success”. During Mr. Washington’s seven-week visit he dined at the historic Charles Fort. The Charles Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Parliament Buildings & History of Barbados Parliament

Historisch monument
Op 15 minutes afstand
Located in the capital city of Bridgetown, the historic Parliament Buildings (once known as the Public Buildings) are home to the House of Assembly and Senate. With more than 350 years of history, these buildings were built from local limestone and completed in 1874. Barbados’s parliament is the 3rd oldest in the Commonwealth, surpassed only by Britain and Bermuda. Few countries can boast over 370 years of unbroken Parliamentary tradition. For Barbados, this tradition is a testament to the island’s stability over the years.

George Washington House

Historisch monument
Op 15 minutes afstand
GEORGE WASHINGTON HOUSE AND MUSEUM where George Washington and his ailing brother lived for two months in 1751. The only place that George Washington ever visited outside America was the Caribbean island of Barbados. The handsome Georgian-style two-storey house and gardens have been restored, and furnished as a typical but not luxurious plantation residence of the mid-18th century, as it might have looked during the brothers’ residence. Mahogany, oak and cherry-wood antiques, plain pine floors, Royal creamware china, wooden wall sconces, Turkish carpets and canopied mosquito-netted beds beautifully re-create the breezy, tropical atmosphere of the period. TUNNELS Accessible only from George Washington House and Museum, these tunnels were re-discovered purely by chance in June 2011. Built sometime during the 1820’s the system is soon to be 200 years old. Originally constructed to provide drainage to the area (the first such system in Barbados), oral history has indicated that they were adopted for use as ‘escape routes’ for the Garrison troops, should the area have ever been invaded, and other clandestine uses. Hours: Monday – Friday 9:00 .m. - 4:00 p.m. and December – April open on Saturdays 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Cost: ADULT US $15.00 / CHILD (AGE 5 YEARS – 12 YEARS) US $7.50 Phone: (246) 228-5461

Barbados Museum & Historical Society

Museum
Op 15 minutes afstand
The Barbados Museum and Historical Society is housed in historic buildings which were originally used as the military prison at St. Ann’s Garrison. During the 18th century the Caribbean was the scene of numerous military conflicts, primarily between England and France who fought for supremacy. The building of garrisons, forts and naval dockyards throughout the region was a direct result. Barbados became the headquarters of the Windward and Leeward command of the English forces, and St. Ann’s Garrison was rapidly expanded because of this. By 1816 most of the Garrison buildings had been constructed and the military prison was completed by 1853. This building is one of only twelve such prisons constructed anywhere in the British Empire, and as such it is unique to the region. In the late 19th century the English decided to reduce their forces in the region. By 1906 the last British regiment had departed the island and many of the Garrison buildings, including the military prison, were handed over to the Barbados Government. The buildings were used for a number of different purposes. In 1933 the prison buildings were leased for a pepper corn rent to this day to the newly formed Barbados Museum and Historical Society, and continue in use.

Bridgetown

Winkelen
Op 15 minutes afstand
Bridgetown is the capital and largest city of Barbados. Bridgetown is sometimes locally referred to as "The City", but the most common reference is simply "Town". Bridgetown is the only city outside the present United States that George Washington visited. Two of Washington's ancestors, Jonathon and Gerrard Hawtaine, were early planters on the island. Their grandmother was Mary Washington of Sulgrave, Northamptonshire, England. In 2011, historic buildings in Bridgetown were designated as a protected area by UNESCO. At the heart of Bridgetown is the Careenage and Constitution River, the Careenage can be observed as a marina for boaters entering or exiting the inner basin located directly in front of the Parliament buildings of Barbados. This body of water provides the city with direct access from medium-sized yachts or small craft boats. In the centre of Bridgetown lies the main street which is Broad Street which runs directly through the centre of the city. Broad Street passes the Parliament Buildings and serves as the centre of city's shopping area. Shopping is plentiful in Bridgetown, and duty-free shopping is also available. Bridgetown serves as a principal centre of commercial activity in Barbados, as well as a central hub for the island's public transport system. Many of the ministries and departments of the island's government are located within the Greater Bridgetown area. The Public Buildings or parliament, which stand at the heart of the city directly north of Heroes Square, house the third oldest continuous parliament in the British Commonwealth. Indeed, at one point in the city's early history, Bridgetown was the most important city of all British possessions in the New World due to the city's easterly location in the Caribbean region.
