Hotel Scala vindt zijn oorsprong in het oude busstation/herberg Gasthof „an der Stiegen” of „an der Hilben”, de naam verwijst naar de vijver die een eeuw geleden voor het hotel lag. Het hotel is ingrijpend veranderd in 1898 toen de gevel in Liberty-stijl werd gebouwd en het hele complex werd vergroot om tegemoet te komen aan de steeds groter wordende stroom Duitse toeristen die van november tot april naar Bolzano kwamen om te recreëren. De periode van het fascisme bracht een dramatische verandering teweeg in Bolzano door de toevoeging van zware industriecomplexen, waardoor een einde kwam aan het goede klimaat en de goede lucht van de stad. Daarom is de afhankelijkheid, die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog door bommen werd verwoest, nooit weer opgebouwd. Pas in 1994 werden tien nieuw gebouwde „Superior” kamers gebouwd op de tuinvleugel, met een mooi uitzicht op de omgeving. Misschien wel de meest uitgebreide renovatie vond plaats in 2008 in de zuidvleugel. 33 verouderde „standaard” kamers werden verwijderd en vervangen door 25 grotere „Comfort” kamers, meestal tweepersoonskamers. Veel andere kamers hebben ook geprofiteerd van de renovatiewerkzaamheden en zijn voorzien van airconditioning.
