The Panier District
The Panier District
Historical landmark
The Panier is the oldest district of Marseille; it has seen waves of immigration in different layers. This is still true today, even if with the economic development and the tourism, it increasingly tends to benefit to artists and middle class. Nevertheless The Panier still feels the good popular Marseille, and through its narrow streets, you will enjoy the most typical slice of life. Climb the 'montée des Acoules', watch the Notre Dame de la Garde from the Lenche Place, take the aperitif at the Bar of the Treize Coins, go into the galleries, have lunch at the Pistoles Place... In the Panier, you can spend the whole day, and even your night...

The oldest museum in Marseille! Created in 1801 by the Consulate, it later moved into the enchanting setting of the Palais Longchamp, a colossal building built by Napoleon 3 to celebrate the arrival of water in the Phocaean city. Among the museum's permanent collections are more than 2000 paintings, 300 sculptures and 3,000 works and drawings dating from the 16th to the 19th century. Even if only 200 masterpieces could be hung in the halls, new paintings regularly come out of their reserve to be presented to the public.

For centuries Marseille had a serious problem of drinking water supply. In the mid-nineteenth century, the construction of the Durance canal, a costly and difficult infrastructure for the time, was begun, aimed at taking water from the nearby river to the city. Underground pipelines crossed what is now known as the Neigbourhood of the Cinq Avenues, whose main artery is Avenue Longchamp. To celebrate the success of the colossal work, at the end of the avenue was built the magnificent palace of the same name, a true song to the water and the wealth that would bring its arrival to the city´s heart
