Het gebouw dateert uit het begin van de 20e eeuw en maakt deel uit van de historische Villa de Madrid (stad Madrid) en werd gebouwd in het ontwikkelde deel van de stad, na de sloop van de muur die de stadsgrenzen afbakende tijdens het bewind van Felipe IV. De gevel is gebouwd in neoklassieke stijl en is nu een van de meest spectaculaire en meest gefotografeerde locaties in de beroemde calle Atocha en, bij uitbreiding, de bekende Barrio de Las Letras, de geboorteplaats van vele bekende Spaanse schrijvers uit de Gouden Eeuw. In tegenstelling tot het klassieke ontwerp van de gevel heeft het hotel een avant-gardistisch, modern en gezellig interieur en de nieuwste hoteltechnologie: LED-verlichting, een geïntegreerd intelligent airconditioning- en verwarmingssysteem dat het bewijs is van de toewijding van Hotel Catalonia Atocha aan een duurzame toekomst.
