Madeira levada walks along the “Levadas” (open canal system that where developed from the early 16th century, to distribute water from the rainfall heavy and wet regions on the north of the island to the drier sun parched regions of the south). Madeira is very mountainous, and most madeira levadas provide easy and relaxing walks through beautiful countryside filled with laurel forests, and others more challenging walks over peaks and mountains, through tunnels and under waterfalls.

A mild climate all year round, water temperatures of 18 to 23°C, depending on the season, crystal clear waters and the likelihood of viewing species like barracudas, monkfish, dolphins, rays and even mantas are the main reasons why lovers of scuba diving consider the island of Madeira more and more for their diving. There are several diving schools or leisure companies, located mainly in Funchal and Caniço de Baixo, which provide courses for all levels, diving excursions for more experienced divers and also equipment hire.

We have always been curious about the other inhabitants of our planet. At Madeira you will be able to see what the ancient Greeks called “Ketos” – marine monster. During the trip you will have the chance of being side by side with whales and dolphins and witness their life in their natural habitat! It is also possible to stop for swimming & snorkelling.
Cable Car
Cable Car
Recreation

From the rack railway of old times to the most sophisticated cable car of today, Funchal is once again connected to the breathtaking beauty of Monte situated in the hills above the city. This is an exciting way to show Madeira's hidden beauty without doing any harm to the environment. It's now possible to ‘fly’ over some of the wonderful landscapes of Madeira! The inclined course, which takes approximately 15 minutes, is 3,718 m (around 12,000 ft) long and has a vertical rise of 560 m (1,837 ft). At the onset of the 20th century, the steam train performed the task of bringing tourists up to the Monte hills on a comfortable and memorable trip. Now, almost 100 years later, the modern cable car has replaced the long decommissioned train’s mission.
Funchal Old Town
Funchal Old Town
Nightlife

Become enchanted by a picturesque setting of narrow cobblestone streets lined by aged buildings (some dating back to the 15th century) in an environment that is full of life and spirit, with a variety of shops, bars and restaurants. This part of town is not only considered to have a great variety of restaurants, but also some of the best on the island. Dining in old town Funchal and tasting Madeira´s traditional cuisine is a must and will certainly not disappoint you. Arte de Portas Abertas” is a public art program that aims in transforming Funchal´s Old town into a permanent outdoor art gallery by displaying over 200 works of art, by guest artists, painted on the doors of Rua de Santa Maria. This colourful project is an attempt to revitalize this part of town and make it more culturally significant for both locals and tourists.

Monte Palace Tropical Garden
Park

Since it's acquisition the "Monte Palace Tropical Garden" has been re-established, with both exotic plants native to various countries (Cycads and Protea from South Africa, azaleas from Belgium, heather from Scotland, among others) and indigenous plants from the Madeira forest namely, "Laurissilva", such as ferns, cedars, laurels, Canary Laurels, etc. The garden was also enriched with the introduction of Koi fish into the existing lakes. Two more lakes with a capacity of 300,000 litres of water were also built. These incorporate a sophisticated filtering system and water purifier, without the use of chemicals that ensure a healthy habitat for the fish, which provide an enjoyable display of colours for our visitors. The garden lanes were adorned with blazonry, squared stones, windows, niches, pagodas, Buddhas, lanterns from different parts of the world and sculptures in natural or cut stone. Walking through the garden, you can admire the renowned ceramic tile collection (dating from 15th - 20th centuries), a panel of 166 terracotta glazed tiles entitled "The adventure of the Portuguese in Japan" and a group of 40 panels portraying the History of Portugal, including the most important events of the kingdoms and the Republics.

Cathedral
Cathedral
Historical landmark
10 mins
The locals living near the Calhau beach built the first church in Funchal. It was enlarged twice, first in 1438 and again in 1450, but still considered too small for the needs of the population. Finally, in November 1485, a new church started being built on the square Campo do Duque but the construction suffered several delays. Then, in the year 1500, the King insisted that the construction of the so-called ‘big church’ be finished, and in 1517 the new temple was finally consecrated. The architecture of this Cathedral is a mixture of a rather heavy south European Gothic and Moorish, Manueline and locally based influences. Ten Gothic arches connect the naves and the dim natural light is coming from eight Manueline breaches, a rose window on the facade and a few spear-shaped windows above the high altar.
