Famous for its whitewashed houses , known as the “white city”, is a casbah of Arab memory, guarded by the ancient ramparts. The nature reserve is surrounded by Mediterranean scrub and the wetlands from which Torre Guaceto gets its name: it comes from the Arabic gaw-sit meaning ‘place of fresh water’ because of the water springs along the coast. Clay or rocky cliffs with small inlets alternate with stretches of low, sandy beaches with dunes up to 10 metres high. Marine Protected area Torre Guaceto is a paradise for freedivers and divers teeming with underwater fauna, while a lush posidonia grows on the sandy bottom. In the wetland, numerous birds such as the marsh harrier, moorhen and grey heron find shelter among the reeds. Every birdwatcher will be enchanted.
