Gauteng is some 1760 meters above sea level and lies on the highest part of the interior plateau on the rolling plains of South Africa's Highveld. The province is a landlocked territory bordered by the North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces. The Vaal River forms a natural border between Gauteng and the Free State province in the south. Gauteng is also the financial services nucleus of South Africa. More than 70 foreign banks have their head offices in Gauteng, not to mention the large numbers of insurance companies, local banks and information technology (IT) companies. Johannesburg is also home to the JSE Limited, the country's stock exchange.
