Honolua Bay is located just north of Kapalua Resort. Since 1978, the area has been protected by the State of Hawaii as a Marine Conservation District. Fishing is strictly prohibited. Honolua Bay is an excellent location for summer snorkeling especially on the west (left-hand) side of the beach. In the winter months it attracts top surfers from around the world, with large winter swells and one of the best surf breaks on Maui. Surrounded by high rocky cliffs on both sides the bay is sheltered from the wind and keep the water calm during the summer. The cliffs also provide a great vantage point to watch surfers and the waves. Although Honolua Bay does not have a sandy beach, access to the snorkeling can be a fun adventure with an easy walk through a jungly tree shaded dirt path. There are no facilities or rental equipment available. Honolua Bay hosts the annual "Billabong Pro" women's surf competition in December.

There are numerous trails that criss-cross the landscape, and they all lead down to the blowhole, but the trail from mile marker 38.5 is not only the safest route, but also offers a look at the famous heart shaped hole in the rock.
