Night Kayak

Svago
Explore one of the most wonderful nighttime nature experiences kayaking through the bioluminescent bay in the Natural Reserve at Laguna Grande in Fajardo, located on the east side of the island, an hour drive from San Juan. Paddle through dense mangrove forest channels under the stars in a two-person clear bottom kayak and learn about the fragile and unique eco-system where the microscopic sea plankton Pyrodinium bahamense can produce fluorescent light when disturbed. Although you’ll be able to play with the water and watch the interaction with the organism, to protect their habitat, swimming is not allowed. You’ll be picked up and dropped off at your hotel for what is about a five-hour excursion. There are two other bioluminescent bays located around Puerto Rico that are also worth checking out.

Bioluminescent Bays

Parco
Have you ever seen water that glows when you touch it? Get ready to awe your loved ones with an unforgettable after-dark treat. Puerto Rico is home to three of the world’s five bioluminescent bays, which are inhabited by microorganisms called dinoflagellates that light up in response to movement in the water. To experience this amazing phenomenon, head to La Parguera in Lajas in the south, Laguna Grande in Fajardo in the east, or take a trip over to Mosquito Bay in Vieques, which holds the Guinness World Record as the brightest bioluminescent bay on the planet. Puerto Rico’s Bioluminescent Bays There are only five bioluminescent bays in the entire world, and Puerto Rico is lucky enough to have three of them packed into one 100-mile-wide and 35-mile-long Caribbean island. Bioluminescent bays are truly a natural wonder! These bays are full of tiny plankton that make the water light up at night — a natural glow emanating from a dark marine masterpiece that you need to see to believe. It may be one of the coolest scientific experiences you’ll ever have. Mosquito Bay The first bioluminescent bay is Mosquito Bay in Vieques. This is considered the brightest bio bay in Puerto Rico and its neon blue light is truly one-of-a-kind. A kayaking tour on the bay is especially breathtaking — like paddling among the stars. La Parguera La Parguera, a small fishing town in the southwest part of Puerto Rico, provides hundreds of mangroves that are an ideal setting for the bioluminescent bay’s creatures. In La Parguera, you can take a tour of the bay on a boat with a glass floor– this ensures that you don’t miss out on the magic but also saves you the effort of paddling. Fajardo On the far east coast of Puerto Rico in the town of Fajardo, you’ll find the third bio bay, which is located within a natural reserve. Enter through an awe-inspiring mangrove forest, and then once you’re on the water, you’ll discover just why these bio bays are so rare, so important to preserve and such a big part of Puerto Rico’s natural beauty! Whether you’re kayaking on the bioluminescent bays or taking a serene boat tour to look, make sure you pick an evening where the moon is hardly visible since the moonlight makes the brightness more difficult to see. And don’t forget to take mental pictures of this once-in-a-lifetime experience while its happening, because photography just won’t do it justice!
