The design of the Santa Cruz ’70 sailing yachts is very popular with sailboat racing enthusiasts. Although the hull and sail are designed for speed, the inboard amenities are many, unlike other racing yachts. Housed in the Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse, the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum traces over 100 years of surfing history as it relates to Santa Cruz. Visitors to the museum will enjoy a spectacular view of Santa Cruz and the Monterey Bay while overlooking Steamer Lane, an internationally known surfing site.Museum displays include surf boards ranging from redwood "planks" to modern high-tech designs, early wetsuits, photographs showing Santa Cruz surfers and wave riding from the 1930s through today, continous videos illustrating surfing's ever-changing styles, and a giftshop with books, T-shirts, sweatshirts, posters, and more.

The Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve is a field laboratory for scientific research and estuarine education. The 1400-acre Reserve is a hub of activity. Visited by thousands every year, the Reserve hosts many programs that promote education, research, and conservation in Elkhorn Slough. The Visitor Center has award-winning exhibits that invite everyone to explore the Unseen Slough. There are five miles of trails that meander through beautiful oak woodlands, calm tidal creeks and freshwater marshes. They offer tours on the weekends and special events throughout the year.

Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park inspires calm reflection among ancient giant redwoods and sunny sandhill ridges. Its historical significance and spectacular scenery draw travelers from around the world. Visitors can enjoy hiking, horseback riding, picknicking, swimming, camping, and fishing on more than 4,650 acres of forested and open land in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The skyscraping redwoods here were admired by explorer John C. Frémont and President Theodore Roosevelt. These trees also inspired some of California’s earliest redwood preservation efforts.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium, which is located in a former sardine cannery on Cannery Row in Monterey, California, is one of the largest and most respected aquariums in the world. It has an annual attendance of 1.8 million and holds 35,000 plants and animals representing 623 species. Among the aquarium's numerous exhibits, two are of particular note. The centerpiece of the Ocean's Edge wing is a 33-foot (10-m) high tank for viewing California coastal marine life. In this tank, the aquarium was the first in the world to grow live California Giant Kelp using a wave machine at the top of the tank (water movement is a necessary precondition for keeping Giant Kelp, which absorbs nutrients from surrounding water and requires turbidity), allowing sunlight in through the open tank top, and pumping in raw seawater. The second exhibit of note is a one million gallon tank in the Outer Bay Wing which features one of the world's largest single-paned windows (crafted by a Japanese company, the window is actually four panes seamlessly glued together through a proprietary process).
