Constructed during the silent film era when films were shown with live musical accompaniment, the Historic Auditorium is known, acoustically speaking, as a "live" house. The acoustics are perfect for classical music, one of the reasons we've been home to the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra since 1984. Additionally, guest performers love being on our stage because of its excellent natural sound. The Historic Theater is also equipped with a state-of-the-art movie sound system, the same system used in the Screening Room. However, since the spaces themselves are very different, films will sound different. Additionally, some soundtracks are not as clear as others. This may be because of a poor quality soundtrack on the print, or it may be an artistic choice by the director. (For instance, the films of Robert Altman tend to have "muddy" sound.) Viewing a film in the Historic Theater is an event in itself. Real gold leaf, real butter on the popcorn - in short, this is a movie palace that is simply not like any other theater. Seats: 1700 Sound: CP500 Dolby Digital Surround sound system with 6 channels. Screen: 35' x 19' Organ: 1927 Barton Theater Pipe Organ

In 2009, the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) opened a landmark 53,000-square-foot expansion, named the Maxine and Stuart Frankel and the Frankel Family Wing for its lead benefactors, and a major restoration of its historic, 41,000-square-foot home, Alumni Memorial Hall. Designed by principal architect Brad Cloepfil and his team at Allied Works Architecture, the $41.9 million transformation not only more than doubled the space available for collections display, temporary exhibitions, programs and educational exploration, but also fulfilled the Museum’s mission to bridge visual art and contemporary culture, scholarship and accessibility, tradition and innovation.

Whatever you drive, your car contains the evolutionary history of more than a hundred car companies that contributed innovation and design enhancements for over a hundred years. Some of these companies are no longer household names. But many remain legends. As a thriving commercial and manufacturing hub, Ypsilanti had a significant influence on these pioneering companies and the men who built them. The Ypsilanti Automotive Heritage Museum tells the story of these companies, preserves an important era in American history, and presents some beautiful machines. The museum also includes Miller Motors, a fully preserved pre-war automobile dealership that still operates serving America's vintage Hudson fleet.

Famed theater architect C. Howard Crane, who also designed the Fox Theater in Detroit, designed the State Theater in downtown Ann Arbor. Built in 1942, the State Theater was the last commercial building to be completed in Ann Arbor after the start of World War II. During the war, building was restricted due to rationing of construction materials. Patrons of the theater fondly remember the blue neon clock to the side of the screen. The clock was there to keep co-eds aware of the time so that they wouldn’t be late for dormitory curfews that were enforced during the 1940′s, 1950′s and into the 1960′s.Built solely to show movies (with only a screen and no usable stage), the State Theater is a high-style art deco cinema.

In 1981, a group of enthusiastic people, adopting the name Yankee Air Force, shared the desire to preserve the facts and glamor of southeastern Michigan's aviation history. They began to lay plans to research, restore, and preserve the all but forgotten history of Willow Run Airport. Their initial goal was to acquire one of the original U.S. Army Air Forces hangars and restore it to its original condition. With the help of Wayne County, the owners of the airport, this first goal was accomplished and the Yankee Air Museum was born. The YAM now has two divisions, the Wurtsmith Division in Michigan and the Northeast Division in New Jersey. Willow Run Airport was built by the Ford Motor Company in 1941 to serve as an airfield for their B-24 Bomber Plant. This was the first aircraft manufacturing plant to use Ford's automotive mass production techniques, a leading technological innovation of the time. Ford Motor Company built 8,685 B-24s from 1942 until the end of World War II. At its peak, the Willow Run plant employed over 42,000 people and produced one B-24 every 59 minutes. The last bomber to roll off the assembly line was named the "Henry Ford." When the war was over the airport became the hub for passenger flights and air freight in the Detroit Metropolitan area.
