Uppsala Slott (Uppsala Castle), which began construction in 1549 during the reign of King Gustav Vasa (also known as Gustav I), played a central role in the history of both Uppsala and Sweden over a long period of time. Many crucial events in Swedish history took place here, such as the Sture Murders in 1567 (the murder of several noblemen accused of treason by the mentally ill King Erik XIV), and the decision by Gustav II Adolf that Sweden should participate in what would later develop into the Thirty Years' War. It was in the Rikssalen (Hall of State) of the castle that Schering Rosenhane announced the abdication of Queen Kristina on June 6, 1654.
