Campofelice di Roccella

Loisirs
À 5 minutes
Campofelice di Roccella is on the northern coast of Sicily, between Termini Imerese and Cefalu. Because of its proximity to the sea and a very long beach, it has many amenities for tourists and is a popular summer destination. Among the most significant monuments in Campofelice di Roccella are the Mother Church in the Piazza Garibaldi, and of course the castle. - The Mother Church was built by the Prince of Roccella Don Gaspare La Grutta in the early 18th century and dedicated to “Santa Rosalia", then restored in the mid-19th and late 20th centuries. From the architectural point of view, the Mother Church has a front intersected by pilasters and two bell towers. - Castle of Campofelice di Roccella stands on a rock overlooking in part the sea. Studies have shown that the castle tower, still visible today, dates from the early origins of the castle in the 14th century. Built with materials from western Sicily it consists of a tower and a rectangular building. - Himera, ruined ancient Greek city: In the area around Campofelice di Roccella, towards Bonfornello, you can visit the ruins of Himera, a Greek city destroyed in 409 BC by the Carthaginians. The foundation of the city, according to Diodorus (1st century BC), occurred 240 years before its destruction, in 648 BC.

Monreale

The hilltop suburb of Monreale, 8km (5 miles) southwest of Palermo, has Sicily’s finest 12th-century Cathedral as well as one of the best medieval mosaic cycles in Europe. Go to the back of the church to see its wonderful russet and brown stone chancel of interlacing arches, Gothic rose windows and Arab windows with pointed arches. In the grandiose interior, the luminous 12th- and 13th-century mosaics of the nave and apse depict the entire cycle of the Old Testament, complete with a 20m (66ft) Christ Pantocrator with saints, while aisle mosaics narrate miracles of the New Testament. The warm-hued human figures are thought to be the work of Venetian mosaicists. The cathedral’s lovely cloisters offer a moment of spiritual meditation along the arcades of delicate carved twin chevron-fluted columns and an almost sensual pleasure among the exotic flowers and trees and Arab fountain of its garden.

Cefalu

Repère historique
Cefalu is a leading Sicilian seaside resort, about half-way along the northern coast of Sicily, facing the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is one of the most important centres of art, culture and history on the island, and also has daily ferry connections with the Aeolian Islands (although Milazzo is closer to the islands and has more regular ferries), and together these two factors make Cefalu a very popular destination in Sicily.

Egadi Island

The Egadi Archipelago, formed by the islands of Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo and the islets of Formica and Maraone, is an extraordinary synthesis of history and nature. Many terrestrial and underwater archaeological finds, dating back to the Paleolithic era, testify to the permanence of people coming from every corner of the Mediterranean, which have given rise to the history of the Western world This is the largest protected marine area in Europe where large prairies of poseidon, as a large submerged tropical forest, provide a valuable habitat for the reproduction of many species of fish, a great variety of resident and migratory birds, extraordinary cetaceans, Caretta Caretta sea turtles and less sporadically the rare Monk Seal.

Taormina

Repère historique
This mountaintop town overlooking the Ionian coast is Sicily's most famous resort, full of restaurants and shops, with beaches nearby. Its historical side is ubiquitous. The Greek amphitheatre, with its famous panoramic view of Mount Etna and the coast, is used for concerts and plays, and medieval walls enclose the old town's stone streets (many closed to traffic). There are several castles, including those in the Castelmola overlooking Taormina.

Siracusa

Syracuse (Siracusa), a Corinthian settlement founded in 734BC, was once a rival to Athens. Today, it is an elegant, cultured town, benefiting from restoration work under the aegis of Unesco. The excellent Museo Archeologico Paolo Orsi offers an overview of the earlier cultures of the island. The principal excavated site, the Zona Archeologica, sits on the northwest corner of the modern city. A classical drama festival is held in May and June in the 5th-century bc Greek theatre.

Mount Etna

This iconic symbol of Sicily is one of Italy’s three active volcanoes. The imposing mountain was once thought to be the home of Cyclops by the ancient Greeks. Take the approach up the mountain through very barren lava fields and at the top, you will find souvenir shops and trucks selling honey with free samples. Find a deep crater where the kids can slide or if you are visiting in the winter months, you can ski down the slopes.

Sicilian desserts

One of Sicily’s best-kept secrets is its cuisine. Only a few Sicilian dishes, like the sweet-and-sour aubergine side-dish known as caponata or the ricotta-filled cannoli, have crossed the Straits of Messina to find fame and fortune abroad. Here are some classic Sicilian desserts: Cannoli: crunchy, rich, ricotta-filled sweet pastries studded with candied fruit and chocolate. Cassata: dessert made from sweetened ricotta, candied fruit, almond paste and sponge cake. Gelati: Sicilians lay claim to having invented ice cream and make some of the best. Granita: sorbet made with fresh fruit or coffee and often served with a brioche for breakfast or any time of day. Frutta alla Martorana: invented by nuns, with marzipan moulded into convincing recreations of fresh fruit.
