An Island Worth Meeting

St. Kitts and its sister island, Nevis, are in the Leeward Islands on the Caribbean/West Indian Archipelago. Meeting venues in St. Kitts and Nevis comprise many luxurious resorts, with Nevis being the more exclusive island for tourism. (It also has the distinction of being the birthplace of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton.) Nestled on flat land between Basseterre, the nation's capital, and North Frigate Bay, where most of St. Kitts' hotels are, Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport (SKB) has direct flights to Atlanta and New York City-JFK (Delta), Miami and Charlotte, NC (American), and San Juan, Puerto Rico (Seaborne). Regular ferries join the two islands (45 minutes from Basseterre; 20 minutes from Major's Bay, also on St. Kitts). There are no large convention venues in St. Kitts or Nevis; the largest venue for groups is the 393-room St. Kitts Marriott Resort & Royal Beach, which has 38,000 square feet of meeting space in nine rooms. Other meeting-worthy venues in St. Kitts exist in two plantations, Ottley's and Rawlin's, with the first having 23 rooms and space for groups of up to 40 persons, the second with 10 rooms and space for groups of the same number. On Nevis, there is the famed, 196-room Four Seasons Resort Nevis, with space for up to 300 persons, and 32-room Mount Nevis Hotel & Beach Club, with a separate conference facility with room for 80. Next to the Marriott, the 18-hole Royal St. Kitts Golf Club has a clubhouse restaurant and professional instruction, while two unique, historical spots that can host outdoor tented events are Brimstone Hill Fortress, the largest fort in the Caribbean, and Romney Manor, which also has a batik shop and artisans. On Nevis is Montpelier Plantation, the spot where Admiral Horatio Nelson got married in 1787 but today a tony, 19-room resort. It is possible to sail between the two islands on a chartered Blue Water Safaris' catamaran. The best restaurant on the island is Marshall's, but other choices also close to Basseterre include Nirvana (at the Fairview Guest House) and Ballyhoos, while a very laid-back choice is the Shipwreck Bar along the drier southeastern peninsula. Another fantastic choice on St. Kitts is the gorgeous, beachside Spice Mill Restaurant.
