The Plaza Mayor, a grand arcaded square in the center of Madrid is very popular with tourists and locals alike. The symmetrical rectangular square features a uniform architecture. It was built during the Habsburg period. It is located only a few blocks away from another famous plaza, the Puerta del Sol. Measuring 129 by 94 meters, and is surrounded by three-story residential buildings having 237 balconies facing the Plaza. It has a total of nine entrance ways.

Puerta del Sol

Puerta del Sol must not be missed. It features several attractions, such as the “Oso y Madroño” (the “Bear and the Strawberry Tree”) statue, next to Calle Alcalá, and the equestrian statue of Carlos III standing nine metres tall. The square is closely linked to the New Years Eve tradition of eating twelve grapes at midnight, one on each chime. The large clock that dominates the square sees the new year in for many Spanish people.
