Black River Gorges National Park

Parc
À 23 km
The Black River Gorges National Park Project was proclaimed on the 15th of June 1994 by the President of the Republic of Mauritius. It is found in the South West of the island, and covers an area of 6,574 hectares of forests including the highest point at Piton de la Rivière Noire (828 m). The Park is managed mainly for the conservation of endemic flora and fauna, dissemination of and creation of public awareness, education and the provision of leisure to both local and foreign visitors. There are different microclimates in the park. Hiking from the eastern side of the park to the west, you will be moving from a damp rainy upland forest to a drier lowland forest. The annual rainfall varying from 1000 mm in drier areas to 4000 mm on the uplands, determines the type of vegetation in different regions. The mean temperature varies from 21 °C (upland) to 27 °C (lowland) during summer months and from 17 °C (upland) to 21 °C (lowland) during the winter period.

Le Morne

Parc
À 3 km
Le Morne is a peninsula located towards the south-western end of the Indian Ocean. An enchanting area of natural beauty, you will also find a few rare species of plants. It’s also an historic place, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where slaves would hide in the past while trying to escape capture. Reflect and take time to think in this magnificent location. If you enjoy learning about history and want to commemorate the struggle against slavery take a trip to Le Morne.

Rochester Falls

Parc
À 29 km
Rochester Falls are by no means the country's most spectacular falls, but they're worth a detour if you're in the area. Follow the makeshift signs from the main road through Souillac – the route is rather circuitous but is reliable nonetheless, although it's a rough ride along the stone-strewn track. Prepare yourself for hawkers who'll want a tip for telling you where to park.

Maison Eureka

Repère historique
À 44 km
The visit of the Eureka Mansion and its grounds provides an intriguing glimpse into colonial life. The house is filled with antiques and photos of the period. It also has a magnificent garden surrounded by waterfalls of the Moka River. The Eureka house was restored and opened to the public as a museum in 1986. The house is constructed largely of wood and surrounded by a long, shady veranda. The extensive grounds consist of a curious mix of natural Mauritian plant life, including mango trees and palms, a waterfall and an English-style garden.

Chamarel Coloured Earth

Parc
À 18 km
This beautiful natural phenomenon offers seven coloured layers of sand as far as the eye can see. You’ll be forgiven for thinking you’ve been transported to another planet when you set eyes on this spectacular wonder. The small village is a favourite tourist attraction on the island. Climb to the viewpoint for amazing panoramic views across the sands. When you have finished marvelling at the beauty here you should visit the waterfalls and rum distilleries nearby.
