Houhai is an integral part of Shichahai. The latter is composed of Front Sea, Back Sea and West Sea. Houhai's scenery consists of waters and mountains, with weeping willows lining along the shore. The houses and residents on shore and residences of royal families and celebrities in the neighbourhood put together to add infinite charm to the Capital City's flavour and history. Houhai is a famous summer hideout in ancient Beijing. By the side of Yin Ding Bridge, there sit century-old shops like the 'Barbecue Ji', 'Lib Zhang' and 'Kongyiji'. On the west shore, sashimi, tea ceremony and boat meals exemplify harmony of food and music. The snacks hiding in the alleys give out the scents of libs and brine, mingling with the mouthwatering aroma of sour bean curd.

Being the culmination of traditional gardening art, the Summer Palace borrows scenes from the surrounding landscape. While it radiates the grandeur of a Chinese imperial garden, it also expresses nature's beauty - a seamless combination that best illustrates the guiding principle of traditional Chinese garden design, "The works of men should match the works of Heaven."
