The Museu Picasso in Barcelona is the most evident proof of the fondness and appreciation Picasso felt for the Catalan capital. The Museum would not have opened its doors on Carrer Montcada in 1963 had it not been, on the one hand, for the will of the artist himself, and on the other, for the determination and commitment of several people: first of all, his personal secretary and great friend Jaume Sabartés, whose works by Picasso were the original core of the Museum’s collection; the artist’s wife, Jacqueline Picasso; members of Barcelona’s civil society who were both admirers and friends of Picasso, especially the Gaspar and Gili families, and finally, the Barcelona City Council. But the history of the Museum would not be the same without a key event that took place in 1970, when Picasso decided to donate to the city of Barcelona all the works that until then had been kept by his relatives in the family residence on Passeig de Gràcia.

The Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya is located in the Palau Nacional of Montjuïc, constructed for the International Exposition of 1929. In 1934 it opened its doors as the Museu d'Art de Catalunya, bringing together the medieval collection. Subsequently, in 1995, then as the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, the new rooms of Romanesque art were inaugurated, and in a successive way the public presentation of the collection was extended, a process that ended in 2004 with the integration of modern art.

When Park Güell began to be built in 1900, Barcelona was a modern and cosmopolitan metropolis whose economy was based on the strength of its industry and which had over half a million inhabitants. Its walls had been knocked down nearly half a century earlier and the new city, the Eixample planned by engineer Ildefons Cerdà, had grown spectacularly from 1860 onwards, in what was the largest 19th century city development project in Europe.

The Museu de Ciències Naturals de Barcelona (Natural Science Museum of Barcelona) is an institution founded over 140 years ago whose natural heritage collections in the fields of mineralogy, petrology, palaeontology, zoology and botany comprise more than three million specimens. This valuable heritage has been enriched year by year thanks to specimens obtained through donations from private individuals, agreements with the Zoo and Catalonia’s natural parklands, and also through the Museum’s own research work.
