In 1671 the city was destroyed in the attack of the English pirate Henry Morgan and never rebuilt, leaving the remains of the old abandoned for more than two centuries. PORTOBELO TOWN AND FORTS / TRAIN RIDE

Historiallinen maamerkki
Etäisyys 1 hour
This tour begins with a train journey from the Pacific Ocean to the calm waters of the Caribbean Sea. Portobelo is a natural harbor and village in the Republic of Panama. One of the most important towns in America during colonial times and port through which spent most of the wealth that Spain sailed to Europe from the conquest of South America today. Portobelo is located on the north coast of the Isthmus of Panama, about 50 km northeast of Colon city. One of the most important buildings at that time was La Aduana. Built between 1630 and 1634, its structure reflected the Renaissance model, brought by the Spaniards in these lands. This building was used as a warehouse, tax office, the real deposit boxes, residence of the governor and royal officials. Today, the ruins of Customs are in good condition as it was rebuilt and reused as a museum, where objects from the Spanish era have been found in recent archaeological research shows. This place has finally become a touristic destination.
