The British Libary

Dating from 1753, the library is now based in a contemporary structure since 1973, with over 150 million items in all known languages: books, journals, newspapers, sound recordings, maps, stamps, prints and drawings. Earliest versions of some of the most significant books of English literature are displayed from copies of Chaucer’s “Canterbury Tales” (1476), to Lewis Carroll’s “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland” (1865). Other highlights include: - Shakespeare’s Quartos - 107 earliest copies of his 21 plays; - Ship journals from Captain Cook’s voyages to the New World (1700’s); - Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Codex Arundel” (1478-1518), research notebooks; - Magna Carta (1215), Britain’s most historical constitutional document
