It quickly became one of Detroit's top luxury hotels and expanded in 1927 with the addition of a 22-story tower designed by famed Detroit architect Albert Kahn in the Beaux-Arts style. Named after a revolutionary war era fort that was located near the site, the Fort Shelby was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
