Additional Information

How it all began… Nicolaas van der Valk opened café De Gouden Leeuw (The Golden Lion) in 1862, at his family farm in Voorschoten. When Nicolaas died in 1902, his youngest son Martien purchased the café in 1929 from his mother. Due to a reconstruction of the road in 1939, the café got severely damaged and Martien and his wife Rie decide to built a new restaurant with eight hotel rooms. Due to their efforts, combined with a friendly atmosphere and several additions, De Gouden Leeuw was restored in full glory. More businesses were developed after World War II, in collaboration with their eleven children. Currently, the kin of Martien and Rie lead the business. Nowadays, the Van der Valk branch owns 68 hotels in the Netherlands, 14 in Germany, 11 in Belgium, 2 in France, 1 in Spain, 1 in Bonaire and 1 in Curacao.
