Christ Church

Historical landmark
2 mi. away
Christ Episcopal Church is a classic white church on a quiet country road. Fronted by a lovely lawn, it's surrounded by huge oak trees which drip Spanish Moss. A more serene setting would be hard to find. Although there has been a church on this site since 1820, the present church was completed in 1884. The inside is beautiful! There are all of these wonderful stained glass windows that were donated by the original families that lived on the island, usually in memory of a loved one that had passed. There is a huge 18th century window in the back that was imported from Germany, and an original Tiffany window. There are also a few pews that date back to the originial church, before the civil war. A number of Presidents have been to worship service at this church and these visits are commemorated by plaques on the pews where they sat. The woodwork inside is truly a work of art as well. You will find the graves of a lot of the native islanders there, and the famous author, Eugenia Price, is buried there somewhere under a huge oak near some Palmettos. The founders of the Methodist church, Charles and John Wesley, also preached some of their first sermons in America under the great oaks found in the cemetery. This is truly a place on the island that should not be missed! It is extremely peaceful and historic! In the '60's and 70's there were some wonderful ghost stories and reported sightings of ghosts with lanturns and women in antebellum white dresses. Definitely a must see.

Gascoigne Bluff

Park
5 mi. away
At Gascoigne Bluff, you can visit the Cassina Garden Club Slave Cabins from the Plantation Era, a Southern Red Cedar tree that is the second largest of its kind in Georgia, a fishing pier, and a beautiful stand of live oak trees. Across the Frederica River, you will see three “ballast hammocks," small islands formed from ballast dumped by European ships before taking on cotton or lumber. In addition to being a historic site, Gascoigne Bluff features 24 acres of greenspace, including a public fishing pier, a floating dock, a picnic pavilion, two grills, a disc golf course, a fitness trail and restroom facilities. The park is free, open year round and host to numerous events such as the annual Georgia Sea Islands Festival. The 6-hole disc golf course is spread throughout the live oak grove. Along the Southeast side of the live oak grove you will see the entrance to the Southeast Georgia Health System Fitness Trail which is a paved fitness trail with signs along the way educating visitors about the “Fit-Trail” balanced program of total fitness conditioning. Gascoigne Bluff is a great place for a family picnic/BBQ under the pavilion and provides easy access to the pier for fishing or boating. Since Gascoigne Bluff is the location for many annual events and fishing tournaments, it is a good idea to check our events calendar before you visit. Restrooms are on-site near the Pier.

St. Simons Lighthouse

Historical landmark
3 mi. away
St. Simons Island Light is a lighthouse near the entrance to St. Simons Sound in United States Coast Guard district number 7. It is 104 feet (32 m) tall and uses a third order fresnel lens. The light keeper's residence is a two-story Victorian brick structure. Established in 1811, the light was first lit in 1872, was automated in 1954 and is still operational. The original octagonal tower on the site was blown up by confederate forces in 1861 to prevent its use by Union forces. The current structure is an active lighthouse for navigational purposes and a museum. It is on lease from the United States Coast Guard to the Coastal Georgia Historical Society and is open to the public.
