Circus Maximus

Historical landmark
2 minutes away
The Circus Maximus is the largest building for public entertainment in antiquity and one of the largest of all time (600 metres long by 140 metres wide). At the time of the Tarquini kings, the Valle Murcia, the wide valley between the Palatine and Aventine hills, was used as a place for chariot races, but only under Julius Caesar a real walled circus was built. The races held in the Circus were the most popular competitive activities for the Roman people, as well as the gladiatorial games in the Colosseum.

Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

Historical landmark
15 minutes away
The Roman Forum was the centre of public life for over a millennium: the site of triumphal processions and elections; the venue for public speeches, criminal trials, and gladiatorial matches; and the nucleus of commercial affairs. Here statues and monuments commemorated the city's great men. The Forum attracts 4.5 million or more sightseers yearly. According to Roman mythology, the Palatine was the birth-place of Romulus and Remus, the twin brothers raised by the she-wolf who were to become the founders of Rome. Shrouded in legend and steeped in history, the Palatine Hill is the cradle of civilization, nowadays an open-air museum (Colosseum/Roman Forum/Palatine).

Mouth of Truth

Historical landmark
3 minutes away
The Mouth of Truth (Bocca della Verità in italian) is without a doubt one of the must-see things in Rome. This monument is located inside the portico of the Paleochristian Church of St Mary in Cosmedin. The Mouth of Truth is a oversized mask from the first century AC, moved to its current location in 1632, that represents a river god with an open mouth. The sculpture represents a man's face with a beard, that over the years has been attributed to various characters in mythology such as Jupiter and the God Poseidon. The myth says that should you put a hand into the mouth of the statue and tell a lie, the statue will cut off and eat the hand.

Spanish Steps

Historical landmark
20 minutes away
The Spanish Steps are an extraordinary masterpiece of 18th-century scenographic taste. They represent the ideal link between the Pincio hill and the underlying Piazza di Spagna. The Staircase was built between 1723 and 1726. In travertine, the staircase has 11 ramps, each made up of 12 steps, which divide, wind, come together, constantly changing direction. A series of balustrades accompanies the ramps that interrupt the steep difference in height and function as a resting point and enjoyment of the landscape. The grandiose structure constitutes an architectural space that serves both for transit and as a meeting place and a pleasant stop.
