Chichen-Itzá

Historical landmark
120 mi. away
Chichen Itza city was the most important capital city of the Maya area in the Classic period and the beginning of Post Classic. When Spaniards arrived, it was the most visited center of cult and pilgrimage of Yucatan Peninsula. Chichen Itza and the Cenote of Sacrifices were, and still are, sacred centers for the Maya. This is a Cultural Heritage Zone of Mexico, and due to its importance was inscribed in UNESCO World Heritage list in 1988. Chichen Itza holds uttermost valuable information of Pre Hispanic past. Due to its beauty and singularity, it is a cultural referent for Mexicans and a symbol of national and indigenous identity. The Pre Hispanic city of Chichen Itza is nowadays a tourist destination visited each year by more than a million people. The most prominent building of the metropolis, Kukulcan Pyramid, known as El Castillo, has become an emblem of the Maya culture all over the world. As the pole of tourist attraction it has become, Chichen Itza faces the great challenge of achieving sustainable development and at the same time, guarantee the integral conservation of the legacy of generations to come. The area that can be visited is 47 hectares long, but the protected zone of Chichen Itza is more than 15 square kilometers, and includes all of the monumental buildings of the city. This delimitation is known as Protection Polygonal. The National Institute of History and Anthropology (INAH) is in charge of the protection, study and outreach of the Archaeological Heritage in Mexico. In Chichen Itza, several research and conservation projects are held by an interdisciplinary group of professionals that includes archaeologists, restorers and anthropologists, as well as specialized workers that live in the surrounding areas.

Golf

Recreation
30 minutes away
Golf Course designed by Nick Price Grand Coral Riviera Maya Resort is an excellent example of the way in which golf course designers and developers are working proactively with environmental groups and government agencies, among others, to create golf courses that are planned, constructed and maintained according to a set of standards that fulfill and even surpass local and federal environmental requirements. The exclusive location of our new resort in Mexico–within the city limits of Playa del Carmen right next to the Caribbean Sea–presents a unique challenge for a greens designer: that of creating a Riviera Maya golf course that satisfies the needs of the area’s growing population while, whenever possible, protecting native vegetation and minimizing the need for excess water consumption. The vision of golf course designer Nick Price was to create a golf course that naturally adjusted and was sensitive to the beauty of the already existing environment. The design team carried out a planning and routing study in conjunction with a team of carefully selected experts made up of the Grupo Grand Coral Developer, wildlife consultants, biologists, civil engineers and environmental consultants. The planning team identified the following areas and issues that require careful handling of the land: Wildlife conservation and improvement of their habitat. Water conservation. Water quality management. Erosion and sedimentation control plan. All-encompassing pest management program.

Tulum

Historical landmark
28 mi. away
16th century sources designate the site as "Zama", possibly related to the Mayan Word for "tomorrow", which is understandable because it is located in the highest area of the East Coast, where to watch the Sunrise is a wonderful spectacle. The name of Tulum, therefore, appears to be relatively recent. Translated into Spanish as "wall" or "Palisade", in clear reference to the wall that is preserved here, this name seems to have been employed to designate the city when it was already in ruins. The site was named Tulum in the 19th century, when Stephens and Catherwood "rediscovered it" completely abandoned, just before the start of the Indian uprising known as "War of chaste" (1847). Tulum is one of the American sites more formerly registered by the Western world. In 1518, the Spanish chronicler Juan Díaz recounted having seen a "big Seville" city, with a tower which was no doubt El Castillo de Tulum, place occupied at the time by the inhabitants of that independent maya headquarters. Archaeological studies published in recent years indicate that there is consistent evidence to assure that Tulum would have been one of the major Mayan cities of the 13th and 14th centuries. Researcher Ernesto Vargas highlights its strategic location between the provinces (kuchkabaloob) of Cochuah and Cozumel, which, coupled with its location on the highest elevation of the region and its efficient defensive system, became an unavoidable settlement for any commercial route and the exploitation of the rich maritime resources off the coast of Quintana Roo. According to the author mentioned, Tulum would have worked politically as a settlement (or batabil) independent of the domain of other provinces, until practically the arrival of the Spaniards in the 16th century, when it was definitely abandoned. In addition, Tulum is the best known and most publicized of Quintana Roo, and can not miss on the itinerary of any visitor. Although known more for the beauty of its beaches, urban design, the wall and the wall paintings are inescapable attractions of the archaeological site.
