Independence Monument (Vimean Ekareach)

Historical landmark
4 km away
The Independence Monument was erected in 1958 in Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia to commemorate Cambodia’s independence from French colonialism in 1953. Designed by Cambodian architect Vann Molyvann, who was ‘personally selected and instructed’ by Prince Norodom Sihanouk on how it should look like, the 37 meters tall symbol took the form of a lotus very much the same as the design of the Bakong Temple from the Roluos group of the 9th century. The one-hundred Nagas and snake motif can be seen in historical, cultural, archaeological, and business contexts. On 9th November each year, government officials from the various ministries and institutions would congregate here to jubilantly celebrate the anniversary of the national independence. In commemoration of the souls of brave combatants and heroes who had laid down their lives for the freedom of the country, senior military and police officers would march before the Independence Monument, accompanied by a military band. The King ceremoniously lights up the ‘Glory Torch’ placed inside the monument; then in a festive manner, colorful balloons are let loose into the sky.

Royal Palace

Historical landmark
5 km away
The beautiful towering spires of the buildings at the palace are a great example of classic Khmer architecture found in Cambodia today. Tourists are welcome to visit the Throne Hall (Preah Tineang Tevea Vinichhay) where coronations and official ceremonies take place. The gardens are beautifully manicured. Buildings on the palace grounds include the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Preah Keo Morakot), Stupas (Chedi), the Royal Dining Hall, the Chan Chhaya Pavilion and a French building that was a gift from Napoleon III. Among the numerous interesting buildings, within the 183,135 square meter compound is the Khemarin Palace, or Prasat Khemarin meaning “Palace of the Khmer King”, the official residence of His Majesty, King Norodom Sihamoni. The Khemarin Palace is in a protected part of the compound and not open to public.

Central Market (Phsar Thmei)

Shopping
15 minutes away
The Central Market (Khmer: ផ្សារធំថ្មី, Phsar Thum Thmei; meaning "New Grand Market") is a market and an art deco landmark in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. The bright yellow building completed in 1937 has a 26-metre high central dome, with four tall arch-roofed arms branching out diagonally across the block, creating vast hallways housing countless stalls and a variety of goods. Initially designed by city architect Jean Desbois, construction works were supervised by French architect Louis Chauchon. When it first opened in 1937, it was said to be the biggest market in Asia; today it still operates as a market.
