Congress Hall
Congress Hall
Historical landmark
1 blk
Once the home of the United States Congress.....The newly formed United States Congress occupied Congress Hall when Philadelphia was the capital of the United States from 1790-1800. Congress Hall has been restored to the way it looked in 1793-1800. The first floor was occupied by the House of Representatives. The upper floor was occupied appropriately, by the upper house, or the Senate. In 1793, President George Washington was inaugurated here for a second term. Four years later, in a precedent-setting ceremony in the House of Representatives chamber, the reins of power were passed from George Washington to John Adams. At the close of the ceremony, John Adams waited for Washington to lead the exit, as everyone had grown accustomed to, but Washington insisted on leaving the room after the new President. Finally, and perhaps most important of all, the Bill of Rights was ratified while Congress met in these rooms. Don't miss the opportunity to tour this building. On the first floor in the House chambers, the valances of dark green above the windows enhance the mahogany of the desks and studded leather chairs. In the south bay is an alcove where Representatives smoked, and drank sherry, port, and madeira. Note too, the small boxes filled with sand near the fireplaces. These were spitting boxes, used in an age when snuff and chewing tobacco were common. Upstairs, 28 of the 32 chairs and the Secretary's desk are authentic. Also remarkable is an 19th-century fresco of an eagle holding an olive branch signifying peace. Notice too, the plaster medallion on the ceiling — an unusual and elegant touch: it has an oval sunburst design honoring the thirteen original states with thirteen stars. The carpet is a reproduction of the original carpet made in the early 1790s by William Sprague of Philadelphia. Its designs are typical patriotic symbols with the centerpiece a chain of 13 state shields. In the corners are cornucopias echoing the wish for abundance in the new land. After Congress departed for Washington, D.C., the Hall reverted back to the Philadelphia County Courthouse, the purpose it was built for.

Liberty Bell
Liberty Bell
Historical landmark
1 blk
The Liberty Bell is an iconic symbol of American independence, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Formerly placed in the steeple of the Pennsylvania State House, the bell today is located in the Liberty Bell Center in Independence National Historical Park. The bell was commissioned in 1752 by the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly from the London firm of Lester and Pack, and was cast with the lettering "Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof," a Biblical reference from the Book of Leviticus. The bell first cracked when rung after its arrival in Philadelphia, and was twice recast by local workmen John Pass and John Stow, whose last names appear on the bell. In its early years the bell was used to summon lawmakers to legislative sessions and to alert citizens about public meetings and proclamations.

Walnut Street Theatre is the oldest theatre in America, standing at the corner of Ninth & Walnut Streets in Philadelphia for over two hundred years Standing at the corner of Ninth and Walnut Streets in Philadelphia for two hundred years, Walnut Street Theatre's National Historic Landmark structure has housed two centuries' worth of American popular entertainment. Most noteworthy American actors of the 19th century and many from the 20th century have appeared on stage at the Walnut. Some of the Walnut's shining stars include: Edwin Forrest, Edwin Booth, Edmund Kean, the Drews, the Barrymores, George M. Cohan, Will Rogers, The Marx Brothers, Helen Hayes, Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, Marlon Brando, Jessica Tandy, Ethel Waters, Audrey Hepburn, Sidney Poitier, Lauren Bacall, George C. Scott, Jane Fonda, Robert Redford, Julie Harris, Jack Lemon, and William Shatner. Over the years audiences have clapped and cheered for circus, opera, vaudeville, lectures, music, dance, motion pictures, and of course, the live theatre productions for which it is best known today. When the theatre opened its doors on February 2, 1809, the pounding of hooves mingled with the shrieks of delight from the crowd as teams of horses circled a dirt riding ring. A few years later, an 80-foot dome was added to the theatre, making it the tallest structure in Philadelphia at that time. The theatre's career as an equestrian circus did not last long, however, and by 1812 the building had been converted to a legitimate theatre, featuring a real stage where the ring had stood. The Walnut's first theatrical production, The Rivals, had President Thomas Jefferson and the Marquis de Lafayette in attendance on opening night.

Betsy Ross House
Betsy Ross House
Historical landmark
2 mins
The Betsy Ross House is a landmark in Philadelphia purported to be the site where the seamstress and flag-maker Betsy Ross lived when she sewed the first American Flag. The origins of the Betsy Ross myth trace back to her relatives, particularly her grandsons, William and George Canby, and the celebrations of the Centennial of 1876. Evidence for the precise location of Ross' home came from verification provided by several surviving family members, although the best archival evidence indicates the house would have been adjacent to the one that still stands today as The Betsy Ross House. Although the house is one of the most visited tourist sites in Philadelphia, the claim that Ross once lived there, and that she designed and sewed the first American flag, sometimes called the Betsy Ross flag, are considered false by most historians.

At its 20-acre home in West Fairmount Park, the Mann is poised to launch an exciting, creative and comprehensive plan for the future that will position it with all Philadelphia residents and visitors alike as the Delaware Valley’s town square—the “go to” place for consistently high-quality, compelling, accessible and fun, communal entertainment events, as well as powerful educational experiences. The Mann fully embraces and welcomes the expectations of 21st century audiences, who are seeking more than a passive listening experience, no matter how good the music. They want participatory, new engaging experiences, with video screen close ups of the performers and an opportunity to share their reactions to the performance in real time through interactive social media. They want to escape from their daily pressures and socialize with friends or family around an entertainment event, in a relaxed, informal, festive environment, with good food and drink. They gravitate to venues with state-of-the-art amenities and unparalleled customer service. And, they have varied, eclectic musical tastes that are less “siloed” in terms of genre than previous generations, with many of them being as passionate about an emotionally compelling orchestral score and 60’s retro tour, as they are for the latest hot indie band. The Mann—with its upgraded multi-stage facilities in a natural park setting and a breathtaking skyline view—has a unique opportunity to meet the expectations of these 21st century audiences. By taking on a more assertive role as an initiator of innovative programming, events and themed festivals, the Mann will become recognized by all in the Philadelphia region as a trusted curator of “must see” performance experiences.

With a design inspired by the eccentric, discerning traveler, the Monaco pieces the old with the new in unique juxtapositions of classic, historic architecture and modern, contemporary finishes. An adaptive reuse of the 1907-original Lafayette Building, the Monaco stays true to its historic roots with carefully restored original wall treatments, moldings and millwork and pays homage to the past in a whimsical and oh-so-Kimpton manner. Local lore is celebrated in its wall installation of oversized calligraphy brushes behind the check-in desks – nodding to the hotel’s neighbor, Independence Hall, and the impactful power of the written word in the signing of the nation-shaping Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution – and the hallways of the guest room floors feature vintage, oversized photographs of the iconic Philadelphia Mummers. We are Kimpton’s second LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certified hotel.
