Elephanta Caves

Nestled on an arm of the Arabian Sea, 10 km to the east of Mumbai, the Elephanta Caves are a network of sculpted caves on the Elephanta island or as known originally; Gharapuri (the city of caves). Dating back to the 5th and 6th century and hewn from basalt rock, the island consists of 7 cave excavations and comprises of sculptures depicting the life and glory of Lord Shiva. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the original builders of these magnanimous structures still remains a subject of debate. A visit to the Elephanta caves is a recommended activity for guests of Grand Hyatt Mumbai.

Situated 500 yards from the Mumbai shoreline, on an islet in the middle of the Arabian Sea; this 18th century shrine is a dedication to Sufi saint - Sayyed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari. A testament to the Indo-Islamic style of architecture, the dargah is linked to the city by a narrow walkway accessible only during low tide. Occasionally, on Fridays one may get to see Sufi musicians performing a form of devotional music called Qawalli at the dargah.
