Local Attractions

What to see near Lisbon

One of the best things about Lisbon, when compared to other European capitals, is the possibility of, in less than 30 minutes, to enjoy the most varied beaches that surround the region. There are many options. Cascais - Estoril - Carcavelos Costa da Caparica Sintra

Santa Catarina

If you take the famous Elevador da Bica (tram) when coming from Cais do Sodré, and also within walking distance of Chiado and Bairro Alto, you find the Santa Catarina neighborhood – here you have a famous belvedere, better known as the Adamastor belvedere, (Adamastor is the statue in the garden and a central figure in the classical work of Camões, The Lusíadas). Let yourself be amazed by the wonderful views of the Tagus River while relaxing in one of the terraces.

Campo Pequeno Bullring

It is impossible not to notice the ancient Bullring if you're at Campo Pequeno. The building is from the late nineteenth century and the entire architecture is of Arabic inspiration. It is currently a multi purpose venue – music concerts, small fairs and festivals. In the galleries and below the arena, you may also find restaurants, a cinema and a shopping centre.

Jardim do Torel

Located next to Campo dos Mártires da Pátria, on the side facing the Avenida da Liberdade, the Garden of Torel is surrounded by palaces of the nineteenth century. The view over Lisbon is very beautiful and within walking distance you find the Elevador do Lavra (tram), which will take you to Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, popularly known as the Colosseum Street (be sure to take a look at the concert programming at the Lisbon Coliseum). During Summer, the Torel has been chosen to have an urban beach with actual sand and a small pool. This year there will also be an urban beach in the Belém area.

Traces of the Moors

Throughout the city - especially in older and winding neighborhoods like Mouraria and Alfama – you will find buildings with features inspired by Arab architecture. From domes to patios and windows with beautiful arabesques, discover some places where the Moorish influence is remarkable.

Miradouro das Portas do Sol

Halfway between the Lisbon Cathedral (Sé) and the Castle you find the Portas do Sol Belvedere – with fantastic terraces and a simply spectacular view of the river. Fom there you can see the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora and the houses of Alfama, lit by the incredible light of Lisbon. It's very easy to reach the Castle from here or, if you prefer, you can go down to Alfama going by picturesque stairways. A little further down, if you go towards the Cathedral, you find another Belvedere – Miradouro de Santa Luzia.

Zoo

Located in Sete Rios, the Zoo is one of the city's main attractions. Here you will find more than 2000 animals of 330 different species: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and arthropods. The Zoo also works as a botanical center and also for conservation, reproduction and reintroduction of endangered species into the wild. There are several thematic activities that allow you to know the different species even better . The subway takes you right to the Zoo (blue line).

Miradouro da Graça

The Bairro da Graça is very rich in breathtaking views over Lisbon. If you want to see the most beautiful sunset over the city, while enjoying a drink, this is the place to go. The Graça, and Senhora do Monte Belvederes the Cerca da Graça Garden, offer stunning landscapes, with the Castle of St. George, the 25 de Abril Bridge and the hills of Lisbon with their traditional houses and rooftops. Take the time to walk or take the tram down to Alfama, and discover the typical small streets of Lisbon. On Saturdays and Tuesdays you can also stroll through the Feira da Ladra (flea market), where they sell literally everything.
