Malahide Castle

Historical landmark
1 km away
One of the highlights of Malahide village in County Dublin is Malahide Castle and Demesne. It used to belong to the Estate of the Talbots de Malahide, and is located just a short walk from Malahide Village and train station. Part of the Demesne originated in the 12th century, and its grounds represent over 270 acres (1.2 km squared) of field and forest covered parkland. The oldest remaining parts of the castle date back to 1185 A.D. The original structure has been extended and developed over the centuries and has provided a home and a sanctuary for the Talbot family for over 790 years. In 1975, Rose Talbot sold the castle to the Irish State to help fund inheritance taxes. In recent years, Malahide Castle has undergone an ambitious €12 million redevelopment plan that has reasserted it as one of the top tourist destinations in the country. The Secret Gardens are a particular draw, featuring magnificent walled gardens. A new shopping and cafe centre has also been added to the current Castle Courtyard.
