This hiking and trekking trail is located inside Doi Inthanon National Park, and in a distance of less than 3 kilometres provides not only a close-up of the flora and fauna but also a gorgeous panoramic view. Suitable for beginner level hikers, the trail takes between two and three hours to complete, but some parts require uphill walking. The trail is closed from June to October, during the rainy season.

A nam ton, also known as khon tho, is a pottery vessel that stores drinking water. One of the most famous places to witness and learn about the nam ton is Nam Ton Salah Dang Pottery Learning Centre. This renowned destination in Mae Wang, Chiang Mai, is dedicated to preserving traditional pottery techniques and forms. Skilled craftsman Salah Dang (Salah means craftsman, and Dang is the founder’s name) established this centre, and his extensive travels throughout Northern Thailand have granted him a wealth of knowledge about these methods. Students and visitors can experience and appreciate the Lanna arts and crafts at this exceptional learning centre.

Shortly before the sun sets, board your boat at the pier and travel along the Ping River, north out of the city. Passing under the bridges, you will soon leave the city behind and enter a wide stretch of water with tree-lined banks. The boat will make a stop at a farmer’s house, and then turn round and cruise back along the river as darkness descends and lights come on in the riverside houses, restaurants and temples.

Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden is situated at the edge of the Doi Suthep-Pui National Park and covers an enormous mountainous area of 560 acres, climbing from 500 m to about 1200 m. On display is a collection of plants from different climates around the world, and the rainforest glasshouse has plants from the tropical forests of Asia. Walking trails lead through evergreen, dipterocarp and pine forest, and three streams flow through the garden into the Mae Sa River.

Chiang Mai Night Safari is a nocturnal zoo, although it has day and night tours, and is believed to be the largest of its kind in the world. The Night Safari has bus tours that allow the up-close viewing of nocturnal animals, while the Day Safari is done by tram. A walking trail is available beside the lake. Other attractions include a musical fountain, and a digital section with technology attractions such as a laser gun game and 3D puppets.

Set atop the mountain of Doi Suthep, this temple was founded in 1383 to house a fragment of bone from the Buddha’s shoulder, carried to the peak, according to legend, by a white elephant. The 306-step staircase to the temple is flanked by jewelled naga. A funicular railway is available. Within the compound are a gold-plated chedi, pagodas, bells, shrines, ancient murals and a museum, and the views of the city and mountain are astounding.

Wat Pha Lat is a quiet and little known forest temple near Doi Suthep, set next to a waterfall and shaded by old trees. The trail leads up a largely gentle incline, and is a little rough and rocky in places. On the way you will see monks heading up and down, and when you arrive you will find dragons and mystic creatures in the temple compound. Serious hikers, and monks, can continue up Doi Suthep.

Wiang Kum Kam is an archaeological site south of Chiang Mai. It contains the ruins of a 13th-century fortified city encircled by moats. Many of the ruins had been submerged under mud and silt for centuries, King Mangrai moved to build Wiang Kum Kam. He built a moat around the city on all four sides, channeling the flowing waters of the Mae Raming. He built a palisade on all four sides of the city, and had a great many dwellings and buildings constructed
