Concert Hall of the 21st Century The Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ opened its doors to the public in the spring of 2005. The spectacular building has become Amsterdam’s Concert Hall of the 21st Century, with an exciting, contemporary programme which continually forges links with other eras, styles, cultures and art forms. The Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ shows current musical developments in the form of special series, festivals, multimedia concerts and exhibitions. Cultural location The Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ serves as a cultural anchor - one of the links connecting the newly developed IJ banks with the old heart of the city. The striking building, with its imposing glass façade, was designed by the Danish architects 3XN and has won various Dutch and international architectural prizes. The Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ consists of a multifunctional state of the art chamber music hall, seating 725, several foyers for workshops and master classes, a smaller hall seating 100, and extensive conference and catering facilities Cafe restaurant Star Ferry The ground floor of the building contains Star Ferry, the cafe restaurant of the Muziekgebouw. This restaurant is open to the public and serves lunches and dinners. It is popular with many music lovers who come to enjoy a meal before the concert. Star Ferry has a waterfront open-air seating area and superb views across the River IJ . For diners Star Ferry has an à la carte menu and a three-course concert menu. Larger groups are also welcome to dine à la carte. Up-to-date menu information is available on the website www.muziekgebouw.nl. You are advised to book your dinner in advance, especially on concert evenings. Star Ferry is open daily from 10.30 to 23.00, and on concert evenings until midnight. Lunch is served between 11.00 and 15.30 and dinner between 17.30 and 22.00.

The BIMHUIS program offers a comprehensive overview of new developments in jazz, improvised music and many other genres, including world music and electronic music.

For more than two years Anne Frank and her family lived in the annex of the building at Prinsengracht 263 where Anne’s father, Otto Frank, also had his business. The Van Pels family and Fritz Pfeffer hid there with them. The doorway to the annex was concealed behind a moveable bookcase constructed especially for this purpose. The office personnel knew of the hiding place and helped the eight people by supplying them with food and news of the outside world. On August 4, 1944, the hiding place was betrayed. The people in hiding were deported to various concentration camps. Only Otto Frank survived the war. Nowadays, the rooms at the Anne Frank House, though empty, still breathe the atmosphere of that period of time. Quotations from the diary, historical documents, photographs, film images, and original objects that belonged to those in hiding and the helpers illustrate the events that took place here. Anne’s original diary and other notebooks are on display in the museum. In the multimedia space, visitors can go on a “virtual journey” through the Anne Frank House, accessing background information about the people in hiding and World War Two. A contemporary exhibition is presented in the exhibition hall.

A’DAM LOOKOUT is an observation deck with an unrivalled panoramic view of Amsterdam. You’ll see the city’s historical centre, its pulsating port, the unique Dutch polder landscape and you’ll spot the famous canals which belong to the UNESCO world heritage list. Complementing the experience is a state-of-the-art interactive exhibition about Amsterdam’s history and culture. A’DAM LOOKOUT is located on top of the A’DAM Tower in Amsterdam North.

The Royal Palace is one of three palaces used by the monarch, Her Majesty Queen Beatrix. It is the venue for State Visits, the Queen’s New Year receptions and other official functions, including the annual presentation of the Erasmus Prize, the Silver Carnation, the Royal Awards for Painting and the Prince Claus Prize. When the Palace is not in use by the monarch (Royal House), it is open to the public under the auspices of the Amsterdam Royal Palace Foundation. The Royal Palace is open to the public most of the year and attracts about one hundred thousand visitors annually. It is open daily in summer, otherwise from Tuesday to Sunday. The annual summer exhibition focuses on the rich history of the building and highlights a heritage dating back to the Golden Age. In autumn, the works of up-and-coming young artists are shown in a special exhibition held in conjunction with the presentation of the Royal Awards for Painting.
