Sustainable Practices

Please provide comments or a link to any publicly communicated Hyatt Regency Amsterdam's sustainability or social impact goals/strategy.
Hyatt Regency Amsterdam doesn’t only look green, it is! As the greenest hotel in The Netherlands on opening, sustainability is in our very heart and soul, affecting every decision we make. Our building, events concept and Green Team all have a positive impact on the world & on you and we have some exciting new sustainable initiatives too! Top Sustainable Initiatives • Rebottled Collaboration with Rebottled, to be the first restaurant in Amsterdam to recycle their own bottles into glassware. Guests in Mama Makan will enjoy glasses made out of our own recycled wine bottles. • IAmStrawless No plastic straws at the bar. Ask about our alternatives. • Guestrooms • All plastic bottles removed and replaced with glass bottles. This stopped us trashing about 500 water bottles per week or more. • Recycling of paper from guestrooms. • Pharmacopia amenities in all guestrooms. Their products are made from natural, organic and sustainably sourced ingredients which are vegan, fair trade and cruelty-free. They use sustainable packaging like recycled plastic bottles. • Lowlander recycling of Christmas trees Instead of throwing our Christmas trees out onto the street, we collaborated with Lowlander to upcycle our Christmas trees into beer! We are one of the brands that will become part of Lowlander’s Winter IPA. • Electric cars The hotel has charging stations for electric cars & a preferred partnership with an electric taxi company. • Fundraising • Giro 555 - During Mama Makan’s Bali Brunch (Amsterdam’s only Indonesian Brunch), we raised money in partnership with Giro555 to support the victims of the Sulawesi earthquake & tsunami in Indonesia. • Orangutan Foundation - Thanks to fundraising at Mama Makan, we’ve adopted two orphaned orangutans rescued in Indonesia – Mona & Okto. The adoption of Mona & Okto means that their care & rehabilitation will be fully supported for two years. There are also orangutan themed colouring books at Mama Makan and Cuddly orangutan toys keep our little guests very happy as part of our VIB (Very Important Baby) program! • NLcares. Hyatt Regency Amsterdam has donated €1500 and 10 volunteers for a day for the Olympic Sports Week, giving less fortunate children a chance to experience the positive benefits sports have. • Green team Cross departmental green team meets monthly to strive to make the hotel more sustainable Meeting & Events Concept: The Five Senses of Botany & Sustainability Inspired by the natural green ambience of the hotel, our award-winning vertical garden and the botanical inspiration taken from Hortus Botanicus, every event experience at Hyatt Regency Amsterdam promises to trigger all of your senses and bring the themes of botany & sustainability to life beyond just recycled paper! Sustainable event concept activations: • Watering cans outside event spaces encourage delegates to pour unused water into them allowing us to keep the plants in the event spaces alive instead of simply pouring the water away. • Our events are plastic free! • All paper is made of recycled material and is recycled itself. • Buffets & breaks are 100% natural, sourced as locally as possible to reduce footprint. • Bespoke infused water stations encourage delegates to stay hydrated and remove the need for excessive use of unsustainable plastic bottles. • Waste separation for events. Building • Hives for swallows & bats in our green exterior increase positive contribution to the surrounding ecosystem. • Soft surfaces like green leafy exterior (middle façade) have benefits such as storm water management and contribute to the building’s sustainability mission. • Lobby - Vertical Garden with special lighting to stimulate photosynthesis and hydroponic system to keep it alive. • Three different building facades. Maintaining some of the building’s old facade was done on purpose to positively blend with rest of neighbourhood. The stained glass windows and iron ornaments from these facades are also re-purposed in the Regency club and events spaces. • Building Function. Due to the way the building was constructed: • 40% more energy savings in comparison to other hotels. • 35% CO2 reduction in comparison to other hotels. • Our ground-source heat pumps provide heating in the winter and cooling in the summer. Their energy is stored 180 meters beneath the ground. • Our elevators have A-label energy, meaning they are energy efficient. • LED & motion sensor lights in all rooms ensure energy usage is at a minimum
