The High Line (also known as the High Line Park) is a 1.45-mile-long (2.33 km) New York City linear park built on a section of a disused New York Central Railroad spur called the West Side Line.[1] Inspired by the 3-mile (4.8-kilometer) Promenade plantée, a similar project in Paris completed in 1993, the High Line has been redesigned and planted as an aerial greenway and rails-to-trails park.[2][3] The High Line Park uses the disused southern portion of the West Side Line running to the Lower West Side of Manhattan. It runs from Gansevoort Street – three blocks below 14th Street – in the Meatpacking District, through Chelsea, to the northern edge of the West Side Yard on 34th Street near the Javits Convention Center. An unopened spur extends above 30th Street to Tenth Avenue.[4] Formerly, the High Line went as far south as a railroad terminal to Spring Street just north of Canal Street, but the lower section was demolished in 1960.[5] Re-purposing of the railway into an urban park began construction in 2006,[6][7] with the first phase opening in 2009[8] and the second phase opening in 2011.[9][10][11][12] The third and final phase officially opened to the public September 21, 2014.[13] A short stub above Tenth Avenue and 30th Street, is still closed As of September 2014, but will open by 2015.[14] The project has spurred real estate development in the neighborhoods which lie along the line.[15] As of September 2014, the park gets nearly 5 million visitors annually.[16]

Located between 10th and 12th Avenues from West 30th to West 34th Street, Hudson Yards has ample connections to commuter rail service, the subway, the West Side Highway, the Lincoln Tunnel and ferries along the Hudson River. The extension of the No. 7 Subway line arrives at the Hudson Yards station, which opened in 2015. The neighborhood buzzes with activity, and is known for chic art galleries, inviting restaurants and bars, and international fashion and design. The celebrated High Line and the new Public Square and Gardens and Hudson Park & Boulevard will welcome residents and visitors to expansive open green space.

Known as "Little Bohemia" starting in 1916,[4] West Village is in some ways the center of the bohemian lifestyle on the West Side, with classic artist's lofts in the form of the Westbeth Artists Community and Julian Schnabel's Palazzo Chupi. It is also the site of sleek new residential towers designed by American architect Richard Meier facing the Hudson River at 173/176 Perry Street. The High Line connects the historic district to the nearby neighborhoods of Chelsea, Hell's Kitchen, and Hudson Yards. The elevated train tracks, mostly running parallel to Tenth Avenue, have been converted to an open greenway. The tracks once served the businesses in the area, but have been long abandoned and converted into a popular public park
