Tief im Herzen der Stadt Doha steht die Festung Al-Koot. Das Fort wurde 1927 von Scheich Abdullah bin Qassim Al-Thani erbaut, der Katar zwischen 1913 und 1949 regierte. Es wurde errichtet, um den nahe gelegenen Waqif-Souk vor potenziellen Dieben zu schützen.
Die Hofmoschee ist eines der interessantesten Merkmale der riesigen Festung, vor allem aufgrund dessen, was ihr fehlt: Wände und ein Dach. Da die Moschee oft von Gefangenen genutzt wurde, musste ihr Plan geändert werden, damit die Wärter sie auch während des Gebets im Auge behalten konnten. Trotz des Mangels an physischer Struktur steht der „Mehrab“ in Mekka immer noch der „Kaaba“ gegenüber.

Der Souq Waqif liegt hinter der Corniche an der Grand Hamed Street und ist ein Prunkstück traditioneller Architektur, Kunsthandwerk und Volkskunst. Er war einst ein Wochenendhandelsplatz für die Beduinen.
Der Souq bedeutet auf Arabisch „stehender Markt“ und vermittelt das Gefühl des alten arabischen Erbes und der Gemeinschaft. Ab 2004 wurde der Souq nach traditionellen katarischen Architekturtechniken unter Verwendung authentischer Materialien renoviert.
