About us
Die Binbirdirek-Zisterne ist nach der Basilika-Zisterne das zweitgrößte Wasserreservoir in Istanbul. Nach alten byzantinischen Quellen wurde es während der Zeit Konstantins (Constantinus) im IV. Jahrhundert erbaut. Aufgrund des Austrocknens der Binbirdirek-Zisterne im Laufe der Zeit wurde dieser Ort seit dem 16. Jahrhundert als Werkstatt genutzt. 224 der 212 Säulen erreichten die Gegenwart. Die Säulen in der Zisterne bestehen aus zwei überlappten Körpern. Auf den Säulen befinden sich Kapitelle in Form eines Pyramidenstumpfes ohne Stickereien. Es ist bekannt, dass die auf den Säulenkörpern gestickten griechischen Buchstaben die Zeichen der Steinmetze sind, die am Bau der Zisterne mitgearbeitet und die Säulen geschnitzt haben.
